Soundstreams and Massey Hall have announced the artists who will be joining Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Steve Reich on April 14, 2016, at Massey Hall.

Reich will celebrate his 80th birthday alongside Toronto’s best new music performers, including three original members of the Steve Reich Ensemble: Steve Reich, Russell Hartenberger and Bob Becker.

“We are thrilled to bring Steve Reich back to Toronto for the third time in a decade,” says Lawrence Cherney, Soundstreams Artistic Director. “Arguably the world’s most influential living composer…”

The concert will include a rare onstage appearance by Reich with percussionist Hartenberger to perform “Clapping Music” (1972).

Other works include a performance of Reich’s “Tehillim” (1981) conducted by Leslie Dala and featuring Canadian sopranos Lesley Bouza, Michelle DeBoer and Carla Huhtanen, as well as alto Laura Pudwell.

The evening will conclude with a performance of “Music for 18 Musicians” (1976) highlighted with Vancouver-based violinist Jesse Zubot, clarinetist Lori Freedman, acclaimed jazz pianist Tania Gill, and contemporary pianist Gregory Oh. The percussion section will include Russell Hartenberger, Bob Becker, Garry Kvistad (NEXUS Percussion), Haruka Fujii (Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble), Ryan Scott (Continuum Contemporary Music), and Michelle Colton (Oregano Percussion).
