As reported in the Detroit News, Toronto Symphony Associate Principal Viola Eric Nowlin will be leaving Toronto to join the Detroit Symphony Orchestra under Music Director Leonard Slatkin for the start of the 2016-2017 season.

Nowlin, 35, will relocate to Detroit with his wife and two-year-old daughter to replace DSO acting principal viola James Van Valkenburg who has been filling in since 2013.

The DSO has been filling vacant orchestra positions after a nasty strike and possible bankruptcy in 2010. They have since hired over 30 new principal positions, including concertmaster, clarinet, flute, bass, timpani, percussion, cello and oboe.

It is not yet clear if Nowlin will also be leaving his role as Violist with the Juno nominated New Orford String Quartet.

We were not able to reach Eric Nowlin for comment.
