Two concerts of chamber music tonight pay homage to minimalism, which is as broad and misleading a musical label as classical.
The homegrown concert takes place at 8 p.m. at the Arstcape Wychwood Barns, a funky converted transit garage just south of St Clair Ave. W.
The performers are the Music in the Barns Chamber Ensemble, who did a wonderful job for Figaro’s Wedding last season, along with the Spectrolite Piano Trio.
The programme includes a string quartet by Philip Glass, as well as some great stuff for clarinet, including Gra, by the late Elliott Cartet.
You’ll find all the details here.
The imported concert comes courtesy of Toronto Summer Music Festival, and features the ever-adventurous duo pianists Katia and Marielle Labèque with four band members exploring different aspects of pattern music at Koerner Hall, in a programme they call The Minimalist Dream House Project.
The concert starts at 7:30 p.m. Details here.
In a neat little twist for people who’s like to experience both programmes, the Music in the Barns Ensemble and Spectrolite replay their concert for Toronto Summer Music’s Shuffle series at Heliconian Hall on Friday at 5 p.m.
