In their monthly Monday concert series at Lula Lounge, Toronto’s new Euphonia orchestra presents music ideally suited to a small venue and small ensemble.
For tonight’s programme, conductor Simon Capet has cleverly mixed styles and periods in concertos by Vivaldi and J.S. Bach and symphonies by C.P.E. Bach and Joseph Haydn.
It’s a rare opportunity to hear these works performed on modern instruments on a scale for which they were originally written.
Euphonia plays on Lula’s dance floor, while the audience sits at tables all around. It’s a listening experience completely different from anything else in town.
And despite the venue being both restaurant and club, it is amazing how respectful everyone usually is regarding the music being made.
