Infrequently heard but decidedly worthwhile works by major composers make up this appealing program. They\u202fwere created\u202fin an impressive variety of locations. Tchaikovsky composed much of the luxurious\u202f<\/span>String Sextet<\/span><\/i>\u202fin 1890, while visiting one of his\u202f<\/span>favourite<\/span>\u202fcities, Florence, Italy \u2013 hence the subtitle, \u201cSouvenir of Florence\u201d. He created the compact\u202f<\/span>Pezzo<\/span><\/i>\u202fCapriccioso<\/span><\/i>\u202fin 1887, as a gift to a former student. It is indeed capricious, moving from a powerful opening through ardent rhapsodizing to a spirited conclusion.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Claude Debussy was just 18 when he composed his first and only piano trio. At that time, he was living in Fiesole, Italy, tutoring the children of Tchaikovsky\u2019s patron, the fabulously wealthy\u202f<\/span>Mme<\/span>\u202fNadezhda\u202fvon\u202fMeck. The Trio is a melodious work that falls comfortably within the Romantic French\u202fschool\u202fof composers such as\u202fFaur\u00e9. It\u202fwas thought\u202fto be lost, until it resurfaced in 1982.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ukrainian\/Russian composer Prokofiev wrote the Five Songs for wordless voice and piano while visiting California in 1920. The pleasant climate seems to have influenced their sunny nature. Five years later, he prepared the second edition, the one\u202fyou\u2019ll\u202fhear at this concert, in which the violin assumes the vocal line.<\/span>\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
