Vandini was the cello teacher at La Piet\u00e0 in Venice alongside Vivaldi, where he played the cello using an underhand bow grip, like a viola da gamba and his pyrotechnic writing goes so high on the cello, you\u2019d almost imagine he conceived this music for the violin\u2026 After devoting the past few years to these composers and their playing techniques, superstar Elinor Frey will prove it CAN be done, with both style and aplomb. She is joined for this concert by Lucas Harris (archlute) and Jo\u00eblle Morton (G violone). The performance takes place at Victoria College Chapel, on the University of Toronto campus. Tickets will be available at the door, and are also available for advance purchase through the website.<\/p>\n<p>Fascinated by the cello\u2019s origins and the creative process of new music,\u00a0<strong>Elinor Frey<\/strong>\u00a0plays both period and modern instruments. Her recent release on the Belgian label Passacaille,\u00a0<em>Berlin Sonatas\u00a0<\/em>with Lorenzo Ghielmi on fortepiano, was nominated for a Juno award for Best Classical CD, Solo &amp; Chamber Music and won the 2015 Qu\u00e9bec Opus Prize for Early Music CD of the year. Her first Baroque CD,\u00a0<em>La voce del violoncello<\/em>, was praised for its \u201ccareful scholarship and brilliant layering of moods and tempos\u201d (Toronto Star) and for the \u201chonest, reflective beauty of her music making\u201d (Strings). Her performance of this program was the winner of the public prize at the 2013\u00a0Utrecht Early Music Festival Fringe. In Summer 2017, she released\u00a0<em>Fior\u00e8<\/em>, the world premiere recording of the sonatas of Angelo Maria Fior\u00e8 and various unknown Italian arias the, performed alongside Lorenzo Ghielmi and Suzie LeBlanc.
