The gala event and fundraiser, a showcase of emerging operatic talent in Canada, takes places on October 26, 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Proceeds from the event go towards supporting the Ensemble Studio programme, which helps up-and-coming opera stars bridge the gap between studying and a professional career.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Ensemble Studio\u2019s national reputation as the premier destination for young opera singers to launch major international careers continues to steadily grow,\u201d says Dorian Cox, Director of the Ensemble Studio, in a statement.<\/p>\n<h2>The Competition<\/h2>\n<p>After sifting through 125 applications, judges travelled to Vancouver, Calgary, Montreal, and Toronto to audition just under 90 potential candidates in-person.<\/p>\n<h3>The Finalists:<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cThis year we saw a significant increase in the number of applicants and heard an extraordinary level of artistry, expressiveness, and virtuosity across the country,\u201d Dorian Cox adds. \u201cThese seven finalists represent the highest level of excellence, and I am looking forward to celebrating them at Centre Stage!\u201d<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Jamal al Titi<\/strong>, baritone \u2014 Minsk, Belarus<\/li>\n<li><strong>Matthew Bermudez<\/strong>, tenor \u2014 London, ON<\/li>\n<li><strong>Matthew Li<\/strong>, bass \u2014 Ottawa, ON<\/li>\n<li><strong>Emily Rocha<\/strong>, soprano \u2014 Courtice, ON<\/li>\n<li><strong>Duncan Stenhouse<\/strong>, bass \u2014 Calgary, AB<\/li>\n<li><strong>Elisabeth St-Gelais<\/strong>, soprano \u2014 Chicoutimi, QC<\/li>\n<li><strong>Gabrielle Turgeon<\/strong>, soprano \u2014 Sault Ste. Marie, ON<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>The Judging Panel<\/h3>\n<p>Along with selecting the finalists, the judging panel will provide each competitor with valuable feedback. The panel consists of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Perryn Leech<\/strong>, COC General Director<\/li>\n<li><strong>Roberto Mauro<\/strong>, COC Director of Artistic Planning<\/li>\n<li><strong>Adrianne Pieczonka<\/strong>, internationally-celebrated soprano<\/li>\n<li><strong>Daniel Bartholomew-Poyser<\/strong>, Canadian conductor and music educator<\/li>\n<li><strong>Thom Allison<\/strong>, actor and director of Rent at the Stratford Festival<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The theme for the gala event will be Lights. Camera. Opera! Hosting duties fall to TV personality Sangita Patel will host what aims to be a night of opera and fun.<\/p>\n<p>All seven finalists will sing one aria, accompanied by the Canadian Opera Company Orchestra in the last round of the competition.
