Musical accompaniment will be performed by Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra with conductor <strong>David Fallis<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHandel\u2019s expansive vision for this timeless story of rebirth resulted in the creation of one of his greatest works,\u201d says <strong>Marshall Pynkoski<\/strong> C.M., Opera Atelier Founding Co-Artistic Director and The Resurection\u2019s Stage Director in a statement. \u201cI\u2019m delighted to be presenting this work as was originally intended \u2014 a work to be experienced by a live audience in a stunning venue. We view this production as the perfect opportunity to welcome the spring and embrace a city that is returning to live theatre with great enthusiasm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Co-Artistic Director <strong>Jeannette Lajeunesse Zingg<\/strong> C.M. has created the choreography for the opera, as performed by the Artists of Atelier Ballet. A libretto by Carlo Sigismondo Capece, court poet to exiled queen Marie Casimire of Poland, accompanies Handel&#8217;s oratorio. The premiere took place via a private performance at the home of Handel&#8217;s then-current patron in Rome.<\/p>\n<p>The story covers the events from Good Friday to Easter Sunday, and consists of recitatives and arias. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/2021\/05\/21\/preview-story-behind-opera-ateliers-filming-handels-resurrection\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">filmed version<\/a> was produced in 2021 during the pandemic.<\/p>\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9uE4N76WsRk?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<p>The characters will be sung by an all-Canadian cast that includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lucifer \u2014 bass-baritone Douglas Williams;<\/li>\n<li>Mary Magdalene \u2014 soprano Meghan Lindsay;<\/li>\n<li>The Angel \u2014 soprano Carla Huhtanen;<\/li>\n<li>John the Evangelist \u2014 tenor Colin Ainsworth;<\/li>\n<li>Mary Cleophas \u2014 mezzo-soprano Allyson McHardy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>On the human plane, familiar events unfold leading up to Christ\u2019s resurrection, with Mary Magdalene, Cleophas and St. John the Evangelist mourning his death at the hands of the Romans. On the celestial plane, an Archangel argues with Lucifer over his claims about Christ\u2019s crucifixion. There are moments of humour as the two battle it out. Huhtanen is well known for her vocal range and acting talent. The Artists of Atelier Ballet will be the Angel\u2019s allies in her quest to enter Lucifer\u2019s realm. <strong>Douglas Williams<\/strong> is renowned for his interpretations of Italian repertoire. Tenor <strong>Colin Ainsworth<\/strong> is returning to the very first professional role he ever sang some two decades ago, also with Opera Atelier. He\u2019s since carved out a career as one of Canada\u2019s leading tenors.<\/p>\n<p>Known as one of the best interpreters of Mozart anywhere, Canadian soprano <strong>Meghan Lindsay<\/strong> is a frequent Opera Atelier performer, and a fan favourite for her theatrical as well as singing abilities. Mezzo <strong>Allyson McHardy<\/strong> has appeared with companies and in festivals all over the world, including the Paris Opera, Festival d\u2019Aix-en-Provence, Chicago Symphony, Toronto Symphony, Glyndebourne Festival, San Francisco Opera, and the Canadian Opera Company, among others. She has performed a variety of roles and repertoire over her career.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jennifer Parr<\/strong> will provide fight choreography for the Artists of Atelier Ballet, and it will represent the first time both male and female Artists will be armed with swords. <strong>Kimberly Purtell<\/strong>, lighting, and costume designer <strong>Michael Legouffe<\/strong> complete the creative team.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a delight to perform Handel\u2019s work in Toronto\u2019s celebrated Koerner Hall,\u201d says<strong> Lajeunesse Zingg.<\/strong> \u201cHandel\u2019s superb score will be well-served by the hall\u2019s renowned acoustics, as our artists explore the ecstatic sensuality of Counter-Reformation Rome.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Opera Atelier\u2019s production of Handel\u2019s <em>The Resurrection<\/em> will be performed at Koerner Hall on April 6, 8 and 9, 2023.
