The theme of TSM this year is Metamorphosis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis year\u2019s theme of Metamorphosis is particularly apt. It represents the re-emergence after a transformative time; an era of new ideas built on the foundation of classical masterworks,\u201d said<strong> Jonathan Crow<\/strong>, Artistic Director, in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is an exciting juncture in classical music where we have top musicians inspiring us with their musical mastery alongside a new generation breaking the mould and boasting dizzying technical heights.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Festival will include 26 mainstage concerts, along with a variety of free concerts, children\u2019s programming, and educational events.<\/p>\n<h2>Mainstage Highlights<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Opening night with Ukrainian pianist <strong>Illia Ovcharenko<\/strong>, winner of the 2022 Honens International Piano Competition, and <strong>Jon Kimura Parker<\/strong>, Music Director of the Honens Competition, together with <strong>Yura Lee<\/strong> and <strong>Jonathan Crow<\/strong> (violin), <strong>Milena Pajaro-van de Stadt<\/strong> (viola), <strong>Ani Aznavoorian<\/strong> (cello), and <strong>Michael Chiarello<\/strong> (bass) performing a program of masterworks.<\/li>\n<li>Pianists<strong> Angela Hewitt<\/strong>, who performs an all-Bach program that includes <em>Chromatic Fantasia and Fugue<\/em> and the <em>Italian Concerto<\/em>, and Charles Richard-Hamelin (with Yura Lee and Jonathan Crow (violin), Milena Pajaro-van de Stadt (viola), Ani Aznavoorian (cello), and Rachael Kerr (piano),) in a program of Robert and Clara Schumann and Brahms.<\/li>\n<li>Acclaimed soprano <strong>Sondra Radvanovsky<\/strong> performs her Carnegie Hall recital program, including Rachmaninoff, Duparc, Richard Strauss, Heggie and Verdi, with American pianist and pedagogue <strong>Anthony Manoli<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_95301\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-95301\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-95301\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/03\/TSM-2023-2.jpg\" alt=\"L-R (clockwise): Sondra Radvanovsky; Teiya Kasahara \u7b20\u539f\u8c9e\u91ce; Payadora (Photos courtesy of TSM)\" width=\"1200\" height=\"628\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-95301\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">L-R (clockwise): Sondra Radvanovsky; Teiya Kasahara \u7b20\u539f\u8c9e\u91ce; Payadora (Photos courtesy of TSM)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>Grammy Award-winning Puerto Rico-born soprano <strong>Ana Mar\u00eda Mart\u00ednez<\/strong> with her collaborator <strong>Craig Terry<\/strong> perform a recital of Spanish-language songs, including work by de Falla, Rodrigo, Turina and Carlos Gardel.<\/li>\n<li>Amplified Opera\u2019s <em>The Butterfly Project<\/em> reclaims tunes from Puccini\u2019s famous opera by interdisciplinary performer-creator <strong>Teiya Kasahara \u7b20\u539f\u8c9e\u91ce<\/strong>. Also called <em>The Ballad of Ch\u014d-Ch\u014d san<\/em>, it includes live and recorded sounds, electronics, and classical singing.<\/li>\n<li>A multidisciplinary performance of newly commissioned works by composers Evan Mitchell, Kevin Lau, and Alexina Louie, along with R. Murray Schafer\u2019s <em>Parting Wild Horse\u2019s Mane<\/em>, with members of the <strong>Ironwood Quartet<\/strong>, along with <strong>Tai Chi Chuan<\/strong> players in a blend of Chinese martial arts and Canadian performance.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Mir\u00f3 Quartet<\/strong> in a program blending classics with contemporary works, and <strong>New Orford String Quartet<\/strong>, performing works by Canadian composer Kelly-Marie Murphy, Schubert, and B\u00e9la Bart\u00f3k.<\/li>\n<li>Violinist <strong>Jonathan Crow<\/strong> and pianist <strong>Philip Chiu<\/strong> examine Beethoven\u2019s legacy by way of quotations of his work, including pieces by Brahms, Alice Hong, Strauss, and Kevin Lau.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>Toronto debut<\/strong> of the<strong> Isidore String Quartet<\/strong>, 2022 winners of the Banff International String Quartet Competition (BISQC), in an eclectic program of Beethoven, Bach, Sri Lankan born Canadian\u00a0Dinuk Wijeratne, and Aida Shirazi.<\/li>\n<li>In a second concert, Isidore will be joined by <strong>Min-Jeong Koh<\/strong> and <strong>Jonathan Crow<\/strong> (violin), <strong>Barry Shiffman<\/strong> (viola) and <strong>Adrian Fung<\/strong> (cello) for Tchaikovsky\u2019s <em>Souvenir de Florence<\/em>, and works evoking travel by Bart\u00f3k, Dvo\u0159\u00e1k, Telemann, and the Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Caroline Shaw.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_95300\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-95300\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-95300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/03\/TSM-2023-3.jpg\" alt=\"Bridge &amp; Wolak (Photos courtesy of TSM)\" width=\"1200\" height=\"628\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-95300\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bridge &amp; Wolak (Photos courtesy of TSM)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>Clarinet and digital accordion duo <strong>Bridge &amp; Wolak<\/strong> bring their signature blend of comedy and musical chops to a program titled Bach to Benny Goodman.<\/li>\n<li>Traditional music from Europe to Iran to Broadway is performed by <strong>Jennnifer Frautschi<\/strong> and <strong>Kelly Hall-Tompkins<\/strong> (violin), <strong>Barry Shiffman<\/strong> (viola), <strong>Matthew Zalkind<\/strong> (cello) and <strong>Philip Chiu<\/strong> (piano).<\/li>\n<li>Award-winning dance company <strong>PointeTango<\/strong> and acclaimed chamber music ensemble<strong> Payadora<\/strong> get together in a performance that mixes ballet and tango to music that ranges from classical to jazz to work music.<\/li>\n<li>Artistic Director <strong>Jonathan Crow<\/strong> is joined by TSM Academy Mentor, violist <strong>Juan-Miguel Hernandez<\/strong>, and cellist <strong>Cameron Crozman<\/strong> in a performance of Dmitry Sitkovetsky\u2019s arrangement of Bach&#8217;s <em>Goldberg Variations<\/em> for string quartet.<\/li>\n<li>In a concert title Metamorphosis, members of the TSO, l\u2019Orchestre symphonique de Montr\u00e9al, and the <strong>Rosebud Quartet<\/strong>, perform Richard Strauss\u2019 <em>Metamorphosen Septet<\/em>, Francis Poulenc\u2019s <em>Sextet for piano and winds<\/em>, and Brahms\u2019s <em>Piano Trio No. 1<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Festival passes are on sale now, with individual tickets going on sale March 21, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/torontosummermusic.com\/events\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a><\/strong>.
