It really is an open-arms, open-heart kind of year \u2014 all music lovers can find a home at the Toronto Symphony Orchestra during this season.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am incredibly excited about what we have planned for next season,\u201d adds TSO Music Director Gustavo Gimeno. \u201cMore than 30 pieces will be performed by the Orchestra for the very first time \u2014 including one on each Masterworks program \u2014 and while many are new commissions, some are classics that simply haven\u2019t made it to our stage before, and others are works by composers historically excluded from the canon. Programming like this is one of the many reasons why I\u2019m thrilled to be leading this extraordinary Orchestra through at least the end of the decade.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Masterworks Highlights<\/h2>\n<p>The Masterworks series is curated by Music Director Gustavo Gimeno. The series opens on September 20 and 21 with Stravinsky\u2019s<em> The Rite of Spring<\/em> and pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet\u2019s interpretation of Gershwin\u2019s <em>Piano Concerto in F.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Other highlights:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Bach\u2019s <em>Brandenburg Concertos<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Brahms <em>Symphony No. 1<\/em> and <em>Piano Concerto No. 1<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Beethoven\u2019s <em>Symphony No. 7<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Faur\u00e9\u2019s <em>Requiem<\/em>, led by TSO Conductor Laureate Sir Andrew Davis and featuring the Amadeus Choir<\/li>\n<li>Copland\u2019s jazz-inspired<em> Clarinet Concerto<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>2023\/24 TSO Spotlight Artists<\/h3>\n<p>Canadian violinist <strong>James Ehnes<\/strong> will perform Bernstein\u2019s Serenade after Plato\u2019s Symposium, the Barber Violin Concerto, and selections from the Violin Concerto by 19th-century Afro-Cuban composer Jos\u00e9 White Lafitte.<\/p>\n<p>Toronto-born mezzo-soprano <strong>Emily D\u2019Angelo<\/strong> will perform her program <em>enargeia<\/em>, a suite that spotlights works by women, and Berg\u2019s <em>Seven Early Songs<\/em>. The Berg will be led by conductor <strong>Michael Tilson Thomas<\/strong>, who will be making a return to the TSO after 35 years. Each one is going to be a real treat.\u201d<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Canadian Premi\u00e8re of <em>Classical Kids LIVE!\u2019s Saint-Georges\u2019 Sword &amp; Bow<\/em>, which details the life and work of Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, 18th-century composer, conductor, and fencer of mixed-race heritage;<\/li>\n<li>SingSong, a sing-along with songs from around the world, featuring flutist Yelin Youn, 2022\/23 TSYO Concerto Competition winner;<\/li>\n<li>Bhangra &amp; Beyond, a fusion of sounds from Africa, Southeast Asia, and the Indian subcontinent;<\/li>\n<li>Dan Brown\u2019s <em>Wild Symphony<\/em>, a musical about animal friends, conducted by RBC Resident Conductor Trevor Wilson, with story and music created by the author of <em>The Da Vinci Code<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Relaxed Performances<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cIf, for any reason, you or your family are hesitant to attend a concert,\u201d says Daniel Bartholomew-Poyser, \u201cthis is the place for you. This is the time for you. And our entire series of Relaxed Performances is for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>These concert experiences are designed to be more welcoming to audience members with sensory and communication disorders, ADHD, learning or developmental disabilities, or dementia \u2014 or anyone who prefers the relaxed format that allows people to move around as they wish.
