The piece is paired with Kudelka\u2019s <em>Passion<\/em>, acquired by the NBC for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/2023\/02\/03\/scoop-national-ballet-principal-dancer-piotr-stanczyk-retire-november-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Principal Dancer Piotr Stanczyk<\/a> to mark his retirement from a stellar 25-year career with the company.<\/p>\n<h3>Onegin (John Cranko) \u2014 November 22 \u2013 26, 2023<\/h3>\n<p>Passionate characters and emotions are reflected in the dance in <em>Onegin<\/em>, considered one of Cranko&#8217;s masterpieces of ballet since its premiere in 1965. Based on Alexander Pushkin\u2019s 19th century verse novel <em>Eugene Onegin<\/em>, it tells a tragic story of one-sided love.<\/p>\n<h3>The Nutcracker (James Kudelka) \u2014 December 8 \u2013 30, 2023<\/h3>\n<p>Toronto\u2019s holiday favourite returns in December 2023 with elaborate sets and costumes from Santo Loquasto and lighting by Jennifer Tipton.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_94739\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-94739\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-94739\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/02\/NBC-Alice-s-Adventures-in-Wonderland.jpg\" alt=\"Heather Ogden and Miyoko Koyasu in Alice\u2019s Adventures in Wonderland (Photo: Karolina Kuras, Courtesy of The National Ballet of Canada)\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-94739\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Heather Ogden and Miyoko Koyasu in Alice\u2019s Adventures in Wonderland (Photo: Karolina Kuras, Courtesy of The National Ballet of Canada)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Alice&#8217;s Adventures in Wonderland (Christopher Wheeldon) \u2014 March 6 \u2013 17, 2024<\/h3>\n<p>Christopher Wheeldon\u2019s entertaining <em>Alice\u2019s Adventures in Wonderland<\/em> returns just in time for March Break 2024. The production, developed in 2011 as a co-production with The Royal Ballet in London, incorporates puppetry and video projections in a spectacular design.<\/p>\n<h3>New Work by William Yong incl World Premiere &amp; Islands (Emma Portner) North American Premiere &amp; Suite en Blanc (Serge Lifar) Canadian Premiere \u2014 March 20 \u2013 24, 2024<\/h3>\n<p>Toronto choreographer William Yong\u2019s eclectic works kick off the Winter Mixed Programme, including a world premiere in his first commission for the NBC. Also on the programme is Canadian choreographer Emma Portner\u2019s <em>islands<\/em>, a duet for two women that premiered with Norwegian National Ballet in 2020. Closing the programme is Serge Lifar\u2019s <em>Suite en Blanc<\/em>, a technically challenging work set to music excerpts composed by \u00c9douard Lalo.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_94738\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-94738\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-94738\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/02\/NBC-Don-Quixote.jpg\" alt=\"Momoko Hirata and Mathias Dingham with Artists of the Birmingham Royal Ballet in Don Quixote (Photo: Johan Persson, Courtesy of Birmingham Royal Ballet)\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-94738\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Momoko Hirata and Mathias Dingham with Artists of the Birmingham Royal Ballet in Don Quixote (Photo: Johan Persson, Courtesy of Birmingham Royal Ballet)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Don Quixote (Carlos Acosta) North American Premiere \u2014 June 1 \u2013 9, 2024<\/h3>\n<p>Cuban-born Carlos Acosta is an acclaimed dancer, and Basilio, the young lover in <em>Don Quixote<\/em>, was one of his signature roles.\u00a0 As a choreographer, Acosta created his own <em>Don Quixote<\/em> after the style of French-Russian choreographer Marius Petipa, whose version of the windmill tilting knight was created for the Bolshoi in 1869. It was remounted for Birmingham Royal Ballet in 2022, where Acosta is now Artistic Director.<\/p>\n<h3>Jewels (George Balanchine) \u2014 June 15 \u2013 22, 2024<\/h3>\n<p>George Balanchine\u2019s ballet triptych closes the season. Its three parts, Emerald, Rubies, and Diamonds, evoke the magic of the precious stones, each set to different music (Gabriel Faur\u00e9 for Emeralds, Igor Stravinsky for Rubies, and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky for Diamonds).
