Born in Valencia, Spain in 1943, Evangelista spent his professional life in Canada, and left a mark on Montr\u00e9al\u2019s music scene and well beyond.<\/p>\n<p>He studied computer science and physics along with music and composition with Spanish composer Vicente Asencio at the University of Valencia. In 1967, he earned a degree in computer science, as well as the first prize in music composition.<\/p>\n<p>After relocating to Montr\u00e9al in 1969, he resumed his studies the following year with composer Andr\u00e9 Pr\u00e9vost at the Universit\u00e9 de Montr\u00e9al, where he earned a Master of Music in composition. He went on to study with Bruce Mather at McGill University, where he earned a Ph.D. in composition in 1984.<\/p>\n<p>Kent Nagano &amp; the OSM premiere Jos\u00e9 Evangelista&#8217;s <em>Accelerando<\/em> (with an Octobasse) in 2016.<\/p>\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1s0tZmKsqA4?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<p>Evangelista became a professor at the Universit\u00e9 de Montr\u00e9al in 1979, where he taught for three decades before retiring in 2009. Samy Moussa and Ana Sokolovic were among his students<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smcq.qc.ca\/smcq\/en\/artiste\/evangelista_jo\/jose-evangelista\/oeuvres\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">prolific composer<\/a> of orchestral and vocal works for small and larger ensembles, Evangelista was known for melodic compositions that often featured Spanish influences, as well as the gamelan orchestra and its rhythms. He served as composer-in-residence at the Akademi Musik Indonesia in Yogyakarta in 1986.
