Six of the 10 finalists in the 2012 Canadian Opera Company Ensemble Studio competition will be joining the young artist development program next season, the organization announced this morning.<\/p>\n

The six are Calgary-native soprano Aviva Fortunata, mezzos Danielle MacMillan (a Toronto native) and Charlotte Burrage (originally from Woodstock, Ont.), London, Ont.-native tenor Andrew Haji, baritone Clarence Frazer, who grew up in Mississauga, and bass-baritone Gordon Bintner, who originally hails from Regina.<\/p>\n

All members of the Ensemble Studio get extensive coaching as well as opportunities to perform in Canadian Opera Company productions. They will join four carry-over members from this season: sopranos Saha Djihanian and Claire de S\u00e9vign\u00e9, tenor Owen McCausland and baritone Cameron McPhail.<\/p>\n

All 10 will perform together for the first time at a free lunchtime concert in the Richard Bradshaw Amphitheatre in September.<\/p>\n

The announcement adds another accomplishment to Andrew Haji’s resum\u00e9. He was awarded the Jim and Charlotte Norcop Prize in Song by University of Toronto’s Faculty of Music, where he has been studying with Darryl Edwards. Each academic year, the prize goes to a particularly promising young singer, who then performs at a special recital, which was held yesterday at Walter Hall.<\/p>\n

This season’s Ensemble Studio members completely take over the Feb. 6 performance of Mozart’s La clemenza di Tito<\/em> at the Four Seasons Centre.
