Victor Asuncion, Rachmaninov and Shostakovich Cello Sonatas (Independent)<\/a> Music so deeply rendered you can almost touch it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.musicaltoronto.org\/2012\/06\/12\/cd-reviews-marc-andre-hamelins-perfect-haydn-piano-sonatas-an-escape-from-our-disordered-world\/\" target=\"_blank\">Marc-Andr\u00e9 Hamelin, Haydn Piano Sonatas III (Hyperion)<\/a> A great pianist&#8217;s sparkling celebration of classical order.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.musicaltoronto.org\/2012\/10\/14\/album-review-philippe-sly-and-his-dreamy-art-of-vocal-seduction\/\" target=\"_blank\">Philippe Sly, In Dreams (Analekta)<\/a> This young baritone made quite the splash this year, capped by a wonderful d\u00e9but solo album.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.musicaltoronto.org\/2012\/09\/04\/cd-reviews-canadian-trio-triple-forte-and-violinist-aislinn-nosky-show-us-how-its-done\/\" target=\"_blank\">Aislinn Nosky, Bach, Ysa\u00ffe, Oesterle (Independent)<\/a> A remarkable violinist with remarkable interpretations.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.musicaltoronto.org\/2012\/03\/28\/cd-review-cecilia-string-quartets-debut-dvorak-album-is-pure-joy-in-a-jewel-case\/\" target=\"_blank\">Cecilia String Quartet, Dvor\u00e1k Quartet Op. 106, Cypresses (Analekta)<\/a> Four young women make a deeply-felt artistic declaration.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.musicaltoronto.org\/2012\/11\/06\/album-review-gryphon-trio-and-james-campbells-soul-shaking-quartet-for-the-end-of-time\/\" target=\"_blank\">Gryphon Trio with James Campbell, For the End of Time (Analekta)\u00a0 <\/a>Music to shake the foundations of our being.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.musicaltoronto.org\/2012\/09\/26\/album-reviews-opera-sopranos-renee-fleming-and-karina-gauvin-in-delectable-prime\/\" target=\"_blank\">Karina Gauvin, Prima Donna (ATMA)<\/a> One of George Frideric Handel&#8217;s muses gets her due from one of our favourite sopranos.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CANADIAN ALBUM OF THE YEAR<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8680\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8680\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8680\" alt=\"David Jalbert\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2012\/12\/david.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"397\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2012\/12\/david.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2012\/12\/david-300x198.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8680\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">David Jalbert<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.musicaltoronto.org\/2012\/08\/14\/interview-pianist-david-jalbert-grasps-for-the-unreachable-in-bachs-goldberg-variations\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jalbert, Goldberg Variations (ATMA)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not sure if anyone who has not personally wrestled with J.S. Bach&#8217;s intellectual and musical challenges can fully appreciate the let-the-rest-of-the-world-be-damned effort involved in a project like this. Conductor Gianandrea Noseda, the London Symphony and powerful singers came together for a concert at London&#8217;s Barbican last year that knocked my emotional socks off.
