Open to young Canadian musicians, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/2022\/10\/06\/interview-pianists-bruce-liu-kevin-ahfat-share-insights-osm-competition-finalists\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">OSM Competition<\/a> has often been a precursor of both more wins on the international circuit, and productive performing careers.<\/p>\n<h2>The prizes<\/h2>\n<p>Friesen takes the <strong>Barbara Bronfman Prize of $20,000<\/strong>, named after a dedicated patron of the OSM. Along with the cash prize, he can look forward to other Grand Prize perks.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Invitations to three performances in the OSM\u2019s calendar: Vir\u00e9e Classique 2023, recitals and\/or chamber music;<\/li>\n<li>The Queen Elisabeth Music Chapelle prize (Belgium): A residency at the Chapelle during the 2023-2024 season offered by Mrs. Marina Gusti.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The second and third prize winners are also recognized.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Second Prize: <strong>Jaeden Izik-Dzurko<\/strong> wins a $12,000 prize offered in collaboration by the Marjorie and Gerald Bronfman Foundation and the Lambert-Gagnon-Fortier Estate.<\/li>\n<li>Third prize: <strong>Jonathan Mak<\/strong> takes home a $7,500 prize offered by the Paul A. Bach Special Round Prize: <strong>Jaeden Izik-Dzurko<\/strong> ($5,000 prize offered by Mrs. Juliana Pleines)<\/li>\n<li>Orford Musique prize: <strong>Hamilton Lau<\/strong>, <strong>Jean-Christophe Melan\u00e7on<\/strong>, <strong>Jessica Yuma<\/strong> ($5,000 prize offered by Mrs. Juliana Pleines)<\/li>\n<li>Domaine Forget prize: <strong>Godwin Friesen<\/strong>, <strong>Jonathan Mak<\/strong>, <strong>Victoria Wong<\/strong> (Three scholarships including accommodation for an advanced training program at the International Music and Dance Academy at Domaine Forget in 2023.)<\/li>\n<li>Michelle Par\u00e9 Prize: <strong>Jaeden Izik-Dzurko<\/strong> ($5,000 prize recognizing a candidate\u2019s commitment to the community in promoting music and making it accessible to all. This prize is offered by Mr. Jean Par\u00e9.)<\/li>\n<li>Semifinalist prizes: $500 prizes offered by the OSM Musician\u2019s Association for the 7 non-finalists candidates.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The full list of winners is available <a href=\"https:\/\/www.concoursosm.ca\/?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Grand Prize Winner Godwin Friesen<\/h2>\n<p>Godwin Friesen was born into the Friesen Family Band. He travelled across the country with the family ensemble, including five siblings, performing as a singer and multi-instrumentalist from an early age. They recorded three albums as a group. He <a href=\"https:\/\/www.godwinfriesen.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">describes himself<\/a> as &#8220;a performer, composer and collaborative artist&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Saturday&#8217;s win is not his first.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>First Prize at the 2015 National Music Festival;<\/li>\n<li>Received the national Senior Mary Gardiner Award in Canadian contemporary music also in 2015;<\/li>\n<li>One of ten pianists selected to compete in the 2018 PianoArts North American Competition in Milwaukee, where he won the Audience Communication Award.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Along with his work as a performer, Friesen is a composer. His first work for orchestra, titled <em>Pilgrimage<\/em>, was premiered by the Saskatoon Youth Orchestra. He&#8217;s on the faculty of the Saskatoon\u2019s Summer Academy for Voice and Piano, and he&#8217;s performed with the Milwaukee, Regina, and Saskatoon Symphony Orchestras. With his Mykola Trio, he participated in the Trondheim International Chamber Music Academy in Norway. The Mykola Trio recently won <strong>first prize at The Glenn Gould School Chamber Music Competition<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Godwin studied at The Glenn Gould School in Toronto on full-tuition scholarship under the direction of John O\u2019Conor from 2016 to 2022. He received both a bachelor\u2019s degree and an Artist Diploma from the institution.
