{"id":76275,"date":"2022-08-16T10:31:53","date_gmt":"2022-08-16T14:31:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/?p=76275"},"modified":"2022-08-17T11:54:51","modified_gmt":"2022-08-17T15:54:51","slug":"report-open-letter-indigenous-classical-music-gathering-calls-change","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/2022\/08\/16\/report-open-letter-indigenous-classical-music-gathering-calls-change\/","title":{"rendered":"REPORT  | Open Letter From Indigenous Classical Music Gathering Calls For Change"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_76276\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-76276\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-76276\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/08\/Indigenous-Open-Letter-REPORT.jpg\" alt=\"Violin by Ri Butov (CC0C\/Pixabay) \" width=\"1200\" height=\"628\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-76276\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Violin by Ri Butov (CC0C\/Pixabay)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity is currently hosting the third iteration of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.banffcentre.ca\/programs\/indigenous-classical-music-gathering\/20220811\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Canadian Indigenous Classical Music Gathering<\/a> (ICMG), led by faculty members Cris Derksen and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/2022\/02\/25\/feature-six-emerging-canadian-composers-keep-eye\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Eliot Britton<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The first ICMG in 2019 gave rise to <a href=\"https:\/\/ipaa.ca\/indigenous-musical-sovereignty\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Indigenous Musical Sovereignty<\/a>, a statement that takes ownership of Indigenous art \u2014 as opposed to &#8220;Indigenous-inspired&#8221; art by others. \u201cWe seek an end to those musical works by outsiders that shock audiences and re-traumatize our most painful experiences,\u201d it reads. \u201cTo non-Indigenous composers who seek to tell \u201cIndigenous-inspired\u201d works: be honest with yourself and ask why you feel compelled to tell this story and whether you are the right person to do so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The statement came after several <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aptnnews.ca\/national-news\/author-joseph-boydens-shape-shifting-indigenous-identity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">high profile cases<\/a> of artists claiming disputed Indigenous ancestry in Canada.<\/p>\n<p>Based on the proceeding of the last ICMG, held in December 2021, an Open Letter was published on social media on August 9. Signed by the attendees, Andrew Balfour (Cree), Cris Derksen (Cree-Mennonite), Jeremy Dutcher (Wolastoq), Michelle Lafferty (T\u0142\u0131\u0328ch\u01eb Dene), Beverley McKiver (Anishinaabe), Melody McKiver (Anishinaabe-Lithuanian-Scottish), Jessica McMann (Cree), and Sonny-Ray Day Rider (Blackfoot) the document calls for changes that will create more room in the classical music world for Indigenous artists, and a better future for Indigenous young people, in particular.<\/p>\n<p>There were several areas of concern that the writers of the letter discuss.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Collaborations<\/strong>: Collaborators are valued, but must understand that working on Indigenous-funded projects means leaving key decisions and credit in the hands of Indigenous artists.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Appropriations<\/strong>: Indigenous stories are best told by Indigenous artists.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Several of the issues the letter points out, while seen through the lens of an Indigenous identity, are also applicable to many others on a broader basis.
