{"id":75936,"date":"2022-07-07T13:48:59","date_gmt":"2022-07-07T17:48:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/?p=75936"},"modified":"2022-07-07T13:48:59","modified_gmt":"2022-07-07T17:48:59","slug":"scoop-toronto-mendelssohn-choir-announces-2022-23-artistic-team","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/2022\/07\/07\/scoop-toronto-mendelssohn-choir-announces-2022-23-artistic-team\/","title":{"rendered":"THE SCOOP | Toronto Mendelssohn Choir Announces 2022\/23 Artistic Team"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_75937\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-75937\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-75937\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/Toronto-Mendelssohn-Choir-July-2022-news.jpg\" alt=\"L-R: Dr. Shireen Abu-Khadar, Composer in Residence, &amp; Dr. Jamie Hillman, Director of Community Engagement &amp; Associate Conductor (Images courtesy TMC)\" width=\"1200\" height=\"628\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-75937\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">L-R: Dr. Shireen Abu-Khadar, Composer in Residence, &amp; Dr. Jamie Hillman, Director of Community Engagement &amp; Associate Conductor (Images courtesy TMC)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Toronto Mendelssohn Choir (TMC) has announced the final additions to their 2022\/23 artistic team, in preparation for the organization\u2019s first full capacity in-person season since the pandemic began.<\/p>\n<p>TMC\u2019s very first Composer in Residence will be <strong>Dr. Shireen Abu-Khade<\/strong> \u2014 the very first in the choir\u2019s 128-year history.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Palestinian-Jordanian Canadian artist, composer, and educator holds a PhD in Music Education from the University of Toronto, and a Master\u2019s in Choral Music from the University of Southern California;<\/li>\n<li>Her work incorporates music from the Levant region of the world, which includes Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Palestine and Iraq;<\/li>\n<li>She is the founder of Dozan World, with the goal of disseminating music of the Levant to the world through music publication.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cShireen is an exceptional artist, composer and educator with whom I share the desire to bring people together through music and to democratize the choral art.\u201d Artistic Director Dr. Jean-S\u00e9bastien Vall\u00e9e says in a media release. \u201cI look forward to collaborating with her on several projects to communicate powerful stories, showcase unheard voices, and bring communities together through the power of choral music.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr. Jamie Hillman<\/strong> joins the TMChoir this season as Director of Community Engagement and Associate Conductor, another new position for the organization.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>An active as a conductor, singer, pianist, music educator, and composer;<\/li>\n<li>As a Boston University Prison Arts Scholar and faculty member of BU\u2019s Prison Education Program, Hillman co-initiated an innovative vocal music program in the Massachusetts prison system.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Hillman\u2019s appointment builds a strong link with the University of Toronto, Faculty of Music., where he was appointed the Elmer Iseler Chair in Conducting in 2021, and where he serves as Director of Choral Studies and an Associate Professor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJamie\u2019s passion and advocacy for the transformative power of choral music as well as his exceptional charisma on the podium is an exceptional addition to the TMChoir\u2019s artistic team,\u201d notes Vall\u00e9e. \u201cHis extensive track record as a music educator and community leader \u2014 including his recent work to establish a vocal music program in the Massachusetts prison system \u2014will allow us to truly serve Toronto\u2019s various communities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rena Roussin<\/strong>, the writer responsible for the program notes this past season, gains a new title of Musicologist in Residence. A M\u00e9tis and settler woman with additional Haida ancestry, Roussin\u2019s concerns revolve around the reconciliation of art music and Indigenous artists and communities in Canada.
