The 2022\/23 season celebrates the orchestra\u2019s 100th anniversary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI cannot fully express my delight and honour to be celebrating such an auspicious anniversary with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and our incredible Toronto community,\u201d says TSO Music Director Gustavo Gimeno in a media release. \u201cWe are doubly thrilled that in 2022\/23 we not only celebrate a landmark event in our history, but also our first complete season of concerts in over two years.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Gimeno\u2019s Masterworks<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Maestro Gimeno will lead ten programs, spread throughout the entire season. His focus lies in mixing pieces of different styles and genres, incorporating both new artists and core repertoire. That includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>An all-Spanish program (March 29\u2013April 2);<\/li>\n<li>Famed pianist <strong>Yuja Wang<\/strong> performs the Canadian Premi\u00e8re of Magnus Linberg\u2019s<em> Piano Concerto No. 3<\/em> (co-commissioned by the TSO) in October, and returns in June to play Rachmaninoff\u2019s dazzling <em>Piano Concerto No. 3<\/em>;<\/li>\n<li>Maestro Gimeno\u2019s own compilation of the Suite from Prokofiev\u2019s <em>Romeo &amp; Juliet<\/em> (February).<\/li>\n<li>He will lead a Gala and fundraiser event starring<strong> Yo-Yo Ma<\/strong> in November, marking Ma\u2019s 50th concert with the TSO. Canadian Indigenous singer\/scholar\/composer\/activist Jeremy Dutcher will reprise their collaboration of \u201cHonour Song,\u201d with Ma, which Dutcher wrote with George Paul and which was featured on the album Notes for the Future with Yo-Yo Ma;<\/li>\n<li>The TSO\u2019s annual holiday performances of Handel\u2019s <em>Messiah<\/em> (December);<\/li>\n<li>The TSO\u2019s first Relaxed Performance for neurodiverse, adult patrons with Beethoven\u2019s <em>Symphony No. 5<\/em> (March).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cAs the pandemic recedes and the number of in-person concerts increases, we have an even greater appreciation for the power of live music and the communal experience we share in our concert hall,\u201d says Gimeno. \u201cMuch of the 2022\/23 season was programmed to reflect and deepen this sense of community between performer and listener.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>A New CEO<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>It will be the first season with the TSO for its new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/2022\/01\/12\/scoop-toronto-symphony-names-mark-williams-ceo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CEO Mark Williams<\/a>. He takes on the position as of April 2022.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am excited to begin my relationship with this great organization at such an incredible milestone,\u201d Williams says in a release.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Toronto Symphony Orchestra\u2019s 100-year musical legacy is renowned and its contribution to the vitality of our community has always been significant. Over the last two years, the company has become yet more embedded into Toronto with an extraordinary number of new programs, collaborations, and partnerships. As we begin our second century, we will continue to offer music that brings joy and solace, opportunities for growth and self-reflection, and support the well-being of our diverse community.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Special Events<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A series of special events will mark the orchestra\u2019s celebration of 100 years in the community.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A <strong>free public concert<\/strong> on <strong>September 24<\/strong> led by Music Director Gustavo Gimeno;<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>TSO\u2019s first tour with Maestro Gimeno<\/strong> from February 11 to 14 2023, taking the orchestra back to New York City, on their annual exchange with the NAC orchestra in Ottawa, and mark the TSO\u2019s d\u00e9but at Chicago\u2019s Symphony Center;<\/li>\n<li>A performance in the newly renovated <strong>Massey Hall<\/strong> \u2014 the TSO\u2019s original home \u2014 on February 17, 2023, the same stage where it gave its first performance on April 23, 2023, playing the same program of Tchaikovsky\u2019s <em>Symphony No. 5<\/em>;<\/li>\n<li>A new <strong>recording of Messiaen\u2019s <em>Turangal\u00eela-Symphonie<\/em><\/strong>, conducted by Gustavo Gimeno, with pianist Marc-Andr\u00e9 Hamelin, and ondes martenot player Nathalie Forget.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The TSO released a seminal version of Messiaen\u2019s masterwork conducted by then-Music Director Seiji Ozawa in 1968. The new <em>Turangal\u00eela<\/em> will be recorded during the live performances on <strong>May 4 and 5, 2023<\/strong>, a full 55 years later.<\/p>\n<p>From the original recording:<\/p>\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/IHYoU5VjbZ0?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<h3><strong>Highlights of the Season<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The <strong>Masterworks Series<\/strong> offers audiences favourite orchestral works, including Rimsky-Korsakov\u2019s<em> Scheherazade<\/em> (September), Saint-Sa\u00ebns\u2019s <em>Organ Symphony<\/em> (September), Bruckner\u2019s <em>Symphony No. 4<\/em> (October), Holst\u2019s <em>The Planets<\/em> (November), Tchaikovsky\u2019s <em>Symphony No. 6<\/em> (November), Mozart\u2019s <em>Requiem<\/em> (January), Shostakovich\u2019s <em>Symphony No. 5<\/em> (January), Rachmaninoff\u2019s <em>Symphonic Dances<\/em> (February), Beethoven\u2019s <em>Symphony No. 5<\/em> (March), Mahler\u2019s <em>Symphony No. 5<\/em> (April), Ravel\u2019s <em>Bol\u00e9ro<\/em> (April), Brahms\u2019s <em>Symphony No. 2<\/em>, (May), and Mussorgsky\u2019s <em>Pictures at an Exhibition<\/em> (May).<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The Artists\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Yuja Wang<\/strong> and French-Canadian cellist <strong>Jean-Guihen Queyras<\/strong> are featured in Gimeno\u2019s Spotlight Artist initiative. In addition to concerts, including Queyras\u2019 TSO d\u00e9but in March with the Schumann<em> Cello Concerto<\/em> and the Ligeti <em>Concerto for Cello and Orchestra<\/em>, and Tchaikovsky\u2019s <em>Variations on a Rococo Theme<\/em> in April, both artists will be involved in talks and other events.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Returning artists<\/strong> include conductor Laureate Sir Andrew Davis (Music Director 1975\u20131988) and Conductor Emeritus Peter Oundjian (Music Director 2004\u20132018), as well as pianists Yefim Bronfman (Beethoven: <em>Piano Concerto No. 3<\/em>, October) and Louis Lortie (Mozart: <em>Piano Concerto No. 23<\/em>, February); violinists James Ehnes (Tchaikovsky: <em>Violin Concerto<\/em>, May), Leila Josefowicz (Helen Grime: <em>Violin Concerto<\/em>, North American Premi\u00e8re, April), and Nicola Benedetti (Wynton Marsalis: <em>Concerto in D<\/em>, Canadian Premi\u00e8re, May). Returning Masterworks guest conductors include Elim Chan, Michael Francis, Fabien Gabel, Kerem Hasan, Gemma New, and John Storg\u00e5rds.<\/p>\n<p>Other high profile <strong>guest soloists<\/strong> include Augustin Hadelich (Sibelius: <em>Violin Concerto<\/em>, November), Sergei Babayan (Tchaikovsky: <em>Piano Concerto No. 1<\/em>, November), Juan Manuel Ca\u00f1izares (Rodrigo: <em>Concierto de Aranjuez for Guitar and Orchestra<\/em>, April), and V\u00edkingur \u00d3lafsson (Mozart: <em>Piano Concerto No. 24<\/em>, May).<\/p>\n<p>Concertmaster <strong>Jonathan Crow<\/strong>, celebrating 11 seasons with the TSO, is the featured soloist for Rimsky-Korsakov\u2019s <em>Scheherazade<\/em> in September, and Brahms\u2019s <em>Violin Concerto<\/em> in January. Crow will also continue to curate the popular pre-concert TSO Chamber Soloists series in 2022\/23.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a joy for me to celebrate my 11th anniversary during this exceptional year at the TSO,\u201d Crow says. \u201cI know I speak for all of the musicians when I thank our patrons, both our long-term subscribers and those who are new to us, for their extraordinary enthusiasm. display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/IEpeJt4KNr4?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<p><strong>D\u00e9buting artists<\/strong> include a roster of up and coming as well as established talent.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Bruce Xiaoyu Liu<\/strong>, the Chinese-Canadian pianist who won the 18th International Chopin Competition in 2021 will open the season with Gustavo Gimeno, playing Chopin\u2019s <em>Piano Concerto No. 2<\/em>;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dalia Stasevska<\/strong> conducts a Tchaikovsky program in November;<\/li>\n<li>Superstar cellist <strong>Sheku Kanneh-Mason<\/strong> plays Elgar\u2019s <em>Cello Concerto<\/em> in January;<\/li>\n<li>Young conductor <strong>Tarmo Peltokoski<\/strong> leads the TSO for Shostakovich\u2019s <em>Symphony No. 5<\/em> in January;<\/li>\n<li>18-year-old Spanish violin prodigy <strong>Maria Due\u00f1as<\/strong> will tour with the TSO to perform Lalo\u2019s <em>Symphonie espagnole<\/em> in February;<\/li>\n<li>Flamenco guitarist <strong>Juan Manuel Ca\u00f1izares<\/strong> performs Rodrigo\u2019s <em>Concierto de Aranjuez<\/em> in March;<\/li>\n<li>Israeli mandolinist <strong>Avi Avital<\/strong> performs with the TSO in April;<\/li>\n<li>Italian conductor <strong>Jader Bignamini<\/strong> visits in May.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Supporting new talent<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The TSO and Music Director Gustavo Gimeno support the future of classical music through a number of initiatives.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In spring 2023, the 2022\/23 NextGen composers \u2014 Matthew-John Knights, Fj\u00f3la Evans, Luiz Ramirez \u2014 will each premi\u00e8re a five-minute work with the TSO.<\/li>\n<li>The first five of ten pieces commissioned by Maestro Gimeno from diverse GTA composers will be premiered by the TSO in spring 2022.<\/li>\n<li>100th Season <em>Celebration Preludes<\/em> by Toronto-area composers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/2022\/02\/25\/feature-six-emerging-canadian-composers-keep-eye\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Eliot Britton<\/a>, Brian Harman, Kevin Lau, Janet Sit, and Christina Volpini will be performed during the 2022\/23 season.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The <strong>Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra (TSYO)<\/strong>, under conductor <strong>Simon Rivard<\/strong>, will perform three full-length orchestral concerts, as well as performing side-by-side concert with the TSO, among other initiatives for young performers.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Premi\u00e8res<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Audiences will have the first chance to hear new works throughout the season.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>World Premi\u00e8res<\/strong>: TSO Composer Advisor Gary Kulesha\u2019s <em>Fourth Symphony<\/em> (January); Icelandic composer\/conductor Daniel Bjarnason\u2019s <em>Trilogy Part 1<\/em> (June); eight new <em>Celebration Preludes<\/em> and NextGen works.<\/li>\n<li><strong>North American Premi\u00e8res<\/strong>: a new orchestration of the Alban Berg <em>Piano Sonata<\/em> by Sir Andrew Davis (February), Francisco Coll\u2019s <em>Aqua Cinerea<\/em> (March), Finnish composer Joonas Kokkonen\u2019s <em>Adagio religioso<\/em> (April), and contemporary Scottish composer Helen Grime\u2019s<em> Violin Concerto<\/em> (April).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Canadian Premi\u00e8res<\/strong>: Unsuk Chin\u2019s <em>subito con forza<\/em> (October), Wynton Marsalis\u2019s<em> Violin Concerto<\/em> written for and performed by Nicola Benedetti (May), and Yuja Wang\u2019s performance of Magnus Lindberg\u2019s <em>Piano Concerto No. 3<\/em>, (October).<\/li>\n<li><strong>TSO Premi\u00e8re<\/strong>: <em>Elysium for Orchestra<\/em> (February) by 2021\/22 Spotlight Artist Samy Moussa.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>More&#8230;<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The <strong>Pops Series<\/strong>, led by Principal Pops Conductor<strong> Steven Reineke<\/strong>, will include a tribute to Epic Film Scores, <em>The Best of Queen<\/em>, and the audience-favourite Holiday Pops concert with Broadway stars Caissie Levy and Paul Alexander Nolan in December, among other offerings.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Music and movie<\/strong> buffs can enjoy live music with Tim Burton\u2019s <em>The Nightmare Before Christmas<\/em> in October; holiday favourite <em>Elf<\/em> with a score conducted by the composer John Debney in December; <em>Star Wars: The Force Awakens<\/em> in October and <em>Star Wars: The Last Jedi<\/em> in May, with Marvel Studios\u2019 <em>Black Panther<\/em> in June, accompanied by a score by Ludwig G\u00f6ransson.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Young People\u2019s Concerts<\/strong>, curated by Barrett Principal Education Conductor &amp; Community Ambassador <strong>Daniel Bartholomew-Poyser<\/strong>, will continue, including new shows like <em>Why Sci-Fi?<\/em> Exploring science fiction in March, and <em>Reggae Roots<\/em>, featuring Jamaican Nova Scotia-based reggae artist Jah\u2019Mila in April.<\/p>\n<p>Both new shows will also be offered as <strong>Relaxed Performances<\/strong> for neurodiverse audiences.<\/p>\n<p>Bartholomew-Poyser will continue his work building on community relationships, including a youth-led program in composition with composer Kevin Lau working on a chamber piece that resonates with youths living in downtown\u2019s Kensington\/Chinatown neighbourhood.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>It all Begins with a Celebration<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The Centennial Celebrations begin on April 9, 2022 with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/2021\/12\/07\/scoop-tsos-gustavo-gimeno-four-former-music-directors-kick-off-100th-season-april-2022\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Celebrate 100: Maestros\u2019 Special Homecoming<\/em><\/strong><\/a> concert, where five of the TSO\u2019s Music Directors return to the podium.
