Cineplex has confirmed they have laid off nearly 6,000 part-time employees across Canada after the closure of movie theatres due to the spread of the Omicron variant.<\/p>\n

Sarah Van Lange, a Spokeswoman for Cineplex, said the layoffs are temporary and look forward to getting employees back to work once the restrictions are lifted.<\/p>\n

Out of the 6,000 workers being laid off, 5,000 are in Ontario, and 1,000 are in Quebec.<\/p>\n

The Ontario province mandate is scheduled to last until at least January 26.<\/p>\n

What about the Met Live in HD?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

With the Met Live in HD<\/em> 2021-22 season<\/a> underway, opera lovers should check with their local Cineplex for availability. At the time of publication, all encores of Eurydice<\/em> scheduled for Jan. 15, 2022, in Ontario, Quebec, and Newfoundland have been cancelled.<\/p>\n

Despite the bad news\u2026<\/strong><\/h3>\n

\u2026Cineplex celebrated pandemic box office records<\/strong> with the release of the blockbuster opening of Spider-Man: No Way Home<\/em>. With $631.8 million in the United States and Canada, the film is now one of the highest-grossing superhero films of all time.<\/p>\n

Cineplex Inc.<\/strong> stock has begun to recover from its bottom of $4.63 on Oct. 6, 2020, to $12.93 on Jan. 7, 2022. While it\u2019s a long way from the ~$53 it reached in the summer of 2017, it is an encouraging reversal.<\/p>\n

In mid-Dec. the chain won a landslide of $1.24B<\/strong> in damages in a lawsuit with former merger partner Cineworld.<\/p>\n
