With theatre audiences now restricted to 50% capacity, Mirvish has announced the cancellation of its production, which had been scheduled for the Princess of Wales Theatre between Jan. 22 and March 13.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI always knew the financial risks involved in bringing this extraordinary production here, and I was happy to take them if it meant that <em>Leopoldstadt<\/em> could be seen by Toronto audiences. That\u2019s how much I believe in the power of this very special play,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mirvish.com\/press\/tom-stoppards-leopoldstadt-will-no-longer-play-toronto-in-2022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>David Mirvish<\/strong><\/a> said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy programming it in 2022, almost two years from the start of the pandemic, we thought we would be protected from the vagaries of COVID-19 and would be able to present the play in Toronto in a relatively safe environment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mirvish still hopes to bring <em>Leopoldstadt<\/em> to Toronto at some point in the future.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Other cancellations &amp; changes<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>National Ballet of Canada<\/strong> announced in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/nationalballet\/photos\/a.488851312142\/10158040446392143\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Facebook post<\/a> that, due to the 50% capacity restriction, <em>The Nutcracker<\/em> was sold out, and in fact, some existing tickets will likely have to be cancelled.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cPerforming at 50% capacity for a full season of performances at the Four Seasons Centre is not economically viable in any circumstance,\u201d said National Ballet of Canada Executive Director <strong>Barry Hughson<\/strong> in a statement to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/entertainment\/2021\/12\/20\/theatres-across-the-province-announce-cancellations-amid-rising-case-counts-new-capacity-limits.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Toronto Star<\/em><\/a>. \u201cA \u2018normal\u2019 season sees average attendance at 85% to achieve a break-even budget.\u201d<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The Elora\u2019s Singers<\/strong> sold out in-person concerts on Dec. 21 &amp; 22 were cancelled due to the omicron variant, but their holiday concert will be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elorasingers.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">available to view online<\/a> until January 7.<\/li>\n<li>After a company member tested positive for COVID-19, the <strong>Shaw Festival<\/strong> cancelled all remaining productions of <em>Holiday Inn<\/em>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/2021\/11\/29\/scrutiny-shaws-holiday-inn-is-a-stellar-musical-with-heart\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">highly reviewed musical<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In most cases, existing ticket holders will be contacted by the company in question.<\/p>\n<h3>A sign of the times&#8230;<\/h3>\n<p><strong>&#8230;It\u2019s<\/strong> <strong>not only in Ontario<\/strong> or even North America that audiences are feeling a seasonal COVID pinch. From London to New York, shows are being cancelled on a scale that brings up memories of winter 2020\u2019s lockdown.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the end of the day, we\u2019ll follow the science, and the science will say, \u2018You need to shut down this performance,\u2019\u201d Broadway League President <strong>Charlotte St. Martin<\/strong> told <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/coronavirus-pandemic-entertainment-lifestyle-health-business-16313cf15758453b4b9429598c040f75\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Associated Press<\/a> on December 16. \u201cWe anticipated that because they were telling us all along that if more people didn\u2019t get their shots, that new variants would arrive and new variants would have cases. And guess what?
