The National Arts Centre Orchestra will be heading to Carnegie Hall on April 5, 2022, for the US premiere of Philip Glass’ Symphony No. 13<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The new symphony was commissioned by the NAC Orchestra on the theme\u00a0Truth in Our Time<\/strong>\u00a0as a tribute to the late Toronto-born journalist\u00a0Peter Jennings<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

While working for ABC News, Jennings was a trustee of Carnegie Hall, the founding director of the American Friends of the NAC Orchestra, and a long-time supporter of Canadian musicians.<\/p>\n

The event will open with Canadian composer\u00a0Nicole Liz\u00e9e\u2019s\u00a0Zeiss After Dark<\/em><\/strong>, followed by\u00a0Dmitri Shostakovich\u2019s Symphony No. 9<\/em><\/strong>. It will also include Canadian violinist James Ehnes<\/strong> playing\u00a0Erich Korngold\u2019s Violin Concerto<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe chose the Korngold concerto because it speaks to the theme Truth in Our Time, as do all the compositions we will be playing at Carnegie Hall,\u201d said Music Director Alexander Shelley<\/strong>. \u201cWe hope to share with our friends in New York City a compelling, engaging and memorable concert that reflects on global challenges such as truth and freedom of speech.\u201d<\/p>\n

Glass\u2019s Symphony No. 13<\/em> will make its world premiere in Toronto at Roy Thomson Hall on March 30, 2022<\/a> with soloist Blake Pouliot.<\/p>\n
