With all the uncertainty that took place in the province throughout the spring, planning was underway for a return to the stage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGetting singers, instrumentalists, craftspeople, technicians, and creative teams back into the opera house and creating new work is a major milestone,\u201d says <strong>COC General Director Perryn Leech<\/strong> in a media release. \u201cThis is an important first step in paving the way toward the next stage in the recovery and return of live opera: welcoming our audiences back into the opera house as soon as it is safe to do so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing able to perform again from our stage is a wonderful moment of celebration, and we\u2019re thrilled to be able to share that with as many people as possible through digital streaming and our exciting new membership program,\u201d continues Leech. \u201cWe want to make it easier than ever to sample what we do for the first time or go back and rediscover something new in a favourite piece of music.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The Fall 2021 Digital Season<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The season debuts on <strong>September 25<\/strong> with<strong> In Concert: Russell Braun and Tamara Wilson<\/strong> with the COC Orchestra performing arias and orchestral pieces by Verdi, Bizet, Wagner, and Puccini, and others. <strong>The highlight:<\/strong> Tamara Wilson\u2019s first public performance of \u201cLiebestod\u201d from Richard Wagner\u2019s <em>Tristan und Isolde<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>On <strong>October 30<\/strong>, the COC presents a new production of <strong>Puccini\u2019s<em> Gianni Schicchi<\/em><\/strong>, under the baton of Italian conductor <strong>Jader Bignamini<\/strong> with the COC Orchestra. British baritone<strong> Roland Wood<\/strong> stars as the schemer Gianni Schicchi, with rising South Korean soprano <strong>Hera Hyesang Park<\/strong> in her COC debut as Lauretta, with Canadian talent <strong>Megan Latham<\/strong>, bass-baritone <strong>Thomas Goerz<\/strong>, tenor <strong>Andrew Haji<\/strong>, tenor <strong>David Curry<\/strong>, and others.<\/li>\n<li>Contemporary Afro-Cuban roots and jazz group, <strong>OKAN<\/strong> perform selections from their JUNO-winning album <em>Espiral<\/em> on <strong>November 13<\/strong>. The group, with core members <strong>Elizabeth Rodriguez<\/strong> and <strong>Magdelys Savigne<\/strong> write songs steeped in their Cuban roots, within the multicultural matrix of Toronto\u2019s music scene.<\/li>\n<li>The COC partners with <strong>Against the Grain Theatre<\/strong> for a multidisciplinary presentation of <strong>Mozart\u2019s <em>Requiem<\/em><\/strong> on November 27. This interpretation incorporates interviews with front-line workers and others affected by the pandemic, and connects those stories with the beauty of Mozart\u2019s music. Kwagiulth and St\u00f3:lo First Nations mezzo-soprano <strong>Marion Newman<\/strong> performs with current and graduate artists from the COC\u2019s Ensemble Studio for a glimpse at opera\u2019s next gen. COC Music Director <strong>Johannes Debus<\/strong> leads the COC Orchestra, and Price Family Chorus Master <strong>Sandra Horst<\/strong> leads the COC Chorus.<\/li>\n<li>On <strong>December 18<\/strong>, <strong>In Winter<\/strong> presents the world premiere of a new commission by M\u00e9tis and French-Canadian composer <strong>Ian Cusson<\/strong> with the company\u2019s full artistic ensemble. The program will blend familiar favourites like \u201cWinter\u201d from Vivaldi\u2019s <em>Four Seasons<\/em>, and classic winter songs with Cusson\u2019s original piece for chorus and orchestra, with texts by M\u00e9tis writer <strong>Katherena Vermette<\/strong>. M\u00e9tis soprano <strong>Melody Courage<\/strong> makes her COC debut with the COC Orchestra under COC Music Director Johannes Debus, the COC Chorus led by Price Family Chorus Master Sandra Horst, and artists of the COC Ensemble Studio.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Free Concert Series<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Fans of the COC\u2019s Free Concert Series will be happy to note that the series returns in digital form as the <strong>Richard Bradshaw Amphitheatre: City Sessions<\/strong>, Presented by TD Bank Group.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Short, digital performances will take place in the Isadore and Rosalie Sharp City Room at the Four Seasons Centre.<\/li>\n<li>City Sessions showcases Toronto\u2019s artists in globally inspired performances of music and storytelling.<\/li>\n<li>Beginning in October, all performances will be available on the COC\u2019s Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook platforms.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>How It Works<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The fall 2021 season of digital programming is available with the COC Digital Membership, offered free of charge, and available across Canada and internationally.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>New digital programming<\/strong> released every month at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coc.ca\/watch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">coc.ca\/watch<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Along with the concerts, the material will include <strong>backstage interviews<\/strong> and insights.<\/li>\n<li>COC Digital Membership gives members<strong> priority access<\/strong> to COC\u2019s in-person performances when they return.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Current COC supporters and subscribers will automatically have the membership applied to their accounts.
