Toronto\u2019s indie opera darling Against The Grain Theatre<\/strong> (AtG) has announced details for their upcoming production of Gustav Holst\u2019s opera S\u0101vitri<\/em>.<\/p>\n

An opera for our times:<\/strong> If you\u2019re not familiar with S\u0101vitri,<\/em> you\u2019re not alone. Written in 1916, S\u0101vitri<\/em> is a rarely heard chamber opera by Holst.<\/p>\n

It chronicles a face-off between an Indian princess and the God of Death who wants to take her husband. Filmed in Prince Edward County, the opera features Indo-Canadian soprano, Meher Pavri\u00a0as\u00a0S\u0101vitri; rising star Armenian-Canadian bass-baritone\u00a0Vartan Gabrilian\u00a0as\u00a0Yama, God of Death; and tenor\u00a0Andrew Haji as Satyav\u0101n.<\/p>\n

\u201cS\u0101vitri spoke to me because not only is the lead a strong woman, but she saves her husband in this story. I love that there\u2019s an empowered woman at the centre of S\u0101vitri,\u201d said Director Miriam Khalil.<\/p>\n

S\u0101vitri marks the second production following Messiah\/Complex<\/em><\/a>, which was one of the best cultural events of the year. It gained the attention of international media, turning it intoCanada\u2019s first COVID-era opera hit. The pressure is on to see if they can do it again.<\/p>\n
