{"id":71169,"date":"2021-05-25T15:24:11","date_gmt":"2021-05-25T19:24:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/?p=71169"},"modified":"2021-05-25T18:49:07","modified_gmt":"2021-05-25T22:49:07","slug":"scoop-tapestry-opera-announces-multi-year-plans-including-new-robot-opera","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/2021\/05\/25\/scoop-tapestry-opera-announces-multi-year-plans-including-new-robot-opera\/","title":{"rendered":"THE SCOOP | Tapestry Opera Announces Multi-Year Plans Including New Robot Opera"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-71170\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/05\/Tapestry_Opera-2022_23.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"628\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cI&#8217;m just a man whose circumstances went beyond his control.\u201d Styx \u2014 Mr. Roboto<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Tapestry Opera has broken with the tradition of announcing its upcoming season, with plans for the next few seasons, including a robot opera by Nicole Liz\u00e9e.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement reveals two new premieres in 2022, plus three major works in development due to premiere in the following two seasons.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom singers in mid-air in Gould\u2019s Wall to pioneering new integrations of technology in R.U.R., this season is going to be one of Tapestry\u2019s most exciting seasons,\u201d said Tapestry Opera\u2019s Michael Mori and Jaime Martino. \u201cWe\u2019ve been developing these and future projects during the pandemic, so that we can come back bolder than ever to thrill and engage with our audiences.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Opera and Robots<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Nicole Liz\u00e9e will return from lockdown with<em> R.U.R. Torrent of Light<\/em> \u2014\u00a0a new chamber opera exploring humanity&#8217;s relationship to technology. Inspired by Karel \u010capek&#8217;s science-fiction play<em> Rossum&#8217;s Universal Robots<\/em>, the opera is set 20 years in the future. Teamed with a libretto from Governor General award-winning writer\u00a0Nicolas Billon, you can expect a wild ride here.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Glenn Gould, reimagined with acrobats<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In another equally strange, yet interesting project is <em>Gould&#8217;s Wall<\/em> \u2014 a chamber opera on the life of Canadian icon and classical pianist Glenn Gould. The project is from the hearts and minds of Brian Current, with libretto by Dora Award-winning actor, director, and writer Liza Balkan. The opera features singers climbing along the interior wall of The Royal Conservatory&#8217;s atrium. The orchestra will feature The Glenn Gould School&#8217;s New Music Ensemble. Audiences will be situated in RCM&#8217;s caf\u00e9 area.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Other Tapestry events include:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Dragon\u2019s Tale<\/strong> | Music by Ka Nin Chan, text by Mark Brownell \u2014 a new opera inspired by poet Qu Yuan and the origin of the Dragon Boat race in Chinese mythology.
