Toronto\u2019s favourite new music forerunners, Soundstreams, has announced the appointment of Emma Fowler as the\u00a0organization<\/span>\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Interim<\/span>\u00a0Executive Director<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Fowler will replace Menon Dwarka<\/a>, who stepped down to pursue new opportunities after serving in the role since January 2020.<\/p>\n

\u201cEmma is uniquely qualified to enable\u00a0<\/span>Soundstreams<\/span>\u00a0to seize unparalleled opportunities in the next phase of our development,\u201d said Lawrence Cherney, Artistic Director,\u00a0<\/em><\/span>Soundstreams<\/span>. \u201cHer strong track record in our artistic planning and production has given her a deep understanding not only of the scope and depth of\u00a0Soundstreams\u2019 programming, but also of its potential to reach ever-broader audiences on the local, national and international stage, on platforms both live and virtual.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Fowler began her career with Soundstreams in 2016 and advanced to Director of Artistic Planning and Outreach. An experienced leader in the non-profit sector, her skills include events production, administration, and education.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe pandemic has transformed the way we work and produce art,\u201d said Fowler. \u201c\u2026I\u2019m excited to continue to find new ways to support Canadian artists and engage diverse audiences through this new lens.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite his short tenure, outgoing executive director Menon Dwarka was pivotal in coordinating the office relocation to the Canadian Music Centre and developing a new Insider\u00a0<\/em>program designed to maintain audience engagement during the pandemic. He also led the creation of a new The Mary-Margaret Webb Foundation Fund for Women Composers<\/em><\/span> that resulted in an organizational record in individual donations the first month after launch.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dwarka told Ludwig Van he decided to leave after reflecting on the diversity, equity and inclusion in the arts sector, especially during the upheaval during the pandemic. He \u201crealized that there was a tremendous amount of good [he] could do helping organizations acclimate to the changing world around us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dwarka will continue his consulting work in the arts sector, serving on boards and organizations like the Canadian Opera Company and Humber College as a voice for equity, diversity and inclusion in the arts. He is also working on upcoming lectures as part of the HotDocs\u2019 Curious Minds series.<\/p>\n

With a new spring in its step, Soundstreams has promoted Tim Crouch to Director, Communications, Marketing, Operations. They have also hired a new intern from the Arts Administration and Cultural Management course at Humber College to assist with marketing, communications, and development.<\/span><\/p>\n
