{"id":70623,"date":"2021-03-19T09:33:30","date_gmt":"2021-03-19T13:33:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/?p=70623"},"modified":"2021-03-19T09:33:30","modified_gmt":"2021-03-19T13:33:30","slug":"scoop-yannick-nezet-seguin-breaks-silence-met-operas-treatment-musicians","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/2021\/03\/19\/scoop-yannick-nezet-seguin-breaks-silence-met-operas-treatment-musicians\/","title":{"rendered":"THE SCOOP | Yannick N\u00e9zet-S\u00e9guin Breaks Silence On Met Opera\u2019s Treatment Of Musicians"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-70624\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/03\/Yannick_Ne\u0301zet-Se\u0301guin_-_met_opera-feature_image.jpg\" alt=\"Yannick_Ne\u0301zet-Se\u0301guin\" width=\"1200\" height=\"628\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After nearly a year of silence regarding the Metropolitan Opera\u2019s musicians being furloughed without pay, music director Yannick N\u00e9zet-S\u00e9guin has officially weighed in.<\/p>\n<p>In a letter obtained by the <span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/03\/18\/arts\/music\/met-opera-nezet-seguin.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>New York Times<\/em><\/a><\/span>, N\u00e9zet-S\u00e9guin stated the Met should work towards a deal with musicians or the risk of losing them.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Met Orchestra committee, 10 out of 97 musicians have formally left the orchestra since the Met stopped paying them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course, I understand this is a complex situation,\u201d N\u00e9zet-S\u00e9guin wrote in the letter, \u201cbut as the public face of the Met on a musical level, I am finding it increasingly hard to justify what has happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProtecting the long-term future of the Met is inextricably linked with retaining these musicians, and with respecting their livelihoods, their income and their well-being,\u201d N\u00e9zet-S\u00e9guin added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe orchestra and chorus are our crown jewels, and they must be protected. Their talent\u00a0is\u00a0the Met. The artists of the Met\u00a0<em>are<\/em>\u00a0the institution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The letter was sent to Peter Gelb, the Met\u2019s general manager, members of the negotiating committees representing the chorus and orchestra, and Met Opera\u2019s board of directors.<\/p>\n<p>The Met replied to the letter stating, \u201cWe share Yannick\u2019s frustration over the lengthy closure and the impact it has had on our employees.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This past week, the Met orchestra musicians accepted $1,543 a week on a temporary basis. It made a similar deal with the Met chorus just over a month ago. This marked the first time they have been paid since April 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Met Opera musicians were among the last professional organizations to reach a deal to compensate musicians financially amid the pandemic.
