Governor General Julie Payette has announced 61 Canadians will be honoured with appointments to the Order of Canada this New Year\u2019s.<\/p>\n
Among them to be named is Daniel Taylor, countertenor, conductor, recording artist, and Professor of Opera, Early Music and Voice, who will be made an Officer.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am honoured to have my service thus far recognized and I am humbled to be in the company of so many dedicated and truly remarkable individuals,\u201d said Taylor.<\/p>\n
Taylor is the Founder and Artistic Director of The Theatre of Early Music and The Trinity Choir. A gifted choral conductor and sought-after teacher, Taylor has travelled around the world giving workshops, masterclasses and recitals. Taylor currently serves as Director of the Historical Performance Area of the Faculty of Music, University of Toronto.<\/p>\n
Rideau Hall described Taylor as \u201cone of our country\u2019s most celebrated cultural ambassadors, distinguishing himself with moving performances and known for his warmth and humour.\u201d<\/p>\n
Today\u2019s announcements also includes other esteemed musicians and arts leaders, including Art Bergmann<\/strong> for his contributions to the Canadian punk rock music scene in the late 1970s, and composer Brian Cherney<\/strong> for his lifelong devotion to Canadian music as an internationally renowned composer, educator and scholar. Well-known champion for the arts in Nova Scotia Barbara Elizabeth Butler<\/strong> was named for her contributions to the musical landscape of Nova Scotia, notably through her promotion of numerous concert series across the province, and Montreal\u2019s Michel Cusson<\/strong> for his role in the evolution of jazz across Canada and for contributions to the entertainment industry. Saskatoon\u2019s Gary Gullickson<\/strong> has also been appointed for advancing the music and arts communities in Saskatoon, as a renowned choir director and educator.<\/p>\n The appointment to the Order of Canada represents the highest civilian honour in the country.
