{"id":69522,"date":"2020-11-02T18:02:59","date_gmt":"2020-11-02T23:02:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/?p=69522"},"modified":"2020-11-03T10:01:21","modified_gmt":"2020-11-03T15:01:21","slug":"the-scoop-canadian-opera-company-issues-annual-report-showing-early-impact-of-covid-19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/2020\/11\/02\/the-scoop-canadian-opera-company-issues-annual-report-showing-early-impact-of-covid-19\/","title":{"rendered":"ANALYSIS | Canadian Opera Company Annual Report Shows Impact From COVID-19"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The Canadian Opera Company&#8217;s annual performance data shows the impact of COVID-19 could have been much worse.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-69537\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/10\/COC-2020-annual-general-meeting.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"628\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/10\/COC-2020-annual-general-meeting.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/10\/COC-2020-annual-general-meeting-300x157.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/10\/COC-2020-annual-general-meeting-1024x536.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/10\/COC-2020-annual-general-meeting-768x402.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Canadian Opera Company presented an all virtual <strong>Annual General Meeting<\/strong> (AGM) last week to over 150 attendees, including COC Board Chair Jonathan Morgan and COC General Director Alexander Neef.<\/p>\n<p>With an unexpected and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/2020\/08\/26\/scoop-canadian-opera-companys-alexander-neef-start-head-paris-opera-september\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">premature exit<\/a><\/span> of Neef to the Op\u00e9ra national de Paris, and the provincial orders keeping concert halls closed amid COVID-19, this is not business as usual for any organization operating in the arts sector right now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis past year will be etched into our collective memories for the many challenges it presented, to our company and to the world,\u201d says COC Board Chair Jonathan Morgan.<\/p>\n<p>As part of their Annual General Meeting, the COC presented an optimistic outlook with materials posted on their <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.coc.ca\/Support\/AGM1920\">website<\/a><\/span> that include audience impact reports, season highlights, and a \u201cFinancials at a Glance\u201d report that largely left the math up to the reader to see an operating deficiency of <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>$677,000<\/strong> for 2019-20.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2026Our 19\/20 season was also filled with many significant success stories, including the overall financial health of the organization within the context of this moment,\u201d said Morgan. The board also thanked the Government of Canada for stepping in with emergency funding, which Morgan mentioned played an \u201cintegral role in keeping the company largely whole.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe COVID-19 pandemic marked a moment of great pause and recalibration for the entire performing arts industry,\u201d added Neef. \u201cAs spring ushered in a renewed social movement aimed at addressing racism and representation across the sector and the globe, the COC started an ongoing dialogue with staff and artists about creating a workspace that aligns with company values of mutual respect and inclusivity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While the full financial reports were not released to the COC&#8217;s website, they have provided us with the full data. Side-by-side, we can see how the COC pulled back from the total number of performances in 2018\/19 while managing to increase revenue. The second quarter of 2020 saw the COC lose two main stage productions (Aida and The Flying Dutchman) due to the fallout from COVID-19 restrictions. Despite the drop in ticket sales due to COVID-19, they sold an average of 1,854 tickets per performance compared to 1,706 tickets per performance in 2018, which suggests that they were on track for a modest increase in ticket sales in 2020.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-69529\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/10\/COC-2020-Image-4.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"698\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/10\/COC-2020-Image-4.png 1200w, https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/10\/COC-2020-Image-4-300x175.png 300w, https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/10\/COC-2020-Image-4-1024x596.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/10\/COC-2020-Image-4-768x447.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Besides being an important revenue generator, subscriptions represent the company&#8217;s most loyal audiences and seeing a downward trend is a pause for concern. The above figures show a staggering <strong>49% decline<\/strong> in subscriptions from just five years ago. The COC averaged <strong>125<\/strong> Under 30 tickets sold per performance in 2020, compared to <strong>132<\/strong> tickets sold per performance in 2018-19. There are likely many complex reasons for the trend, including increasing competition, particularly from digital platforms, as well as the changing entertainment preferences from Millennials and Gen Z.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-69527\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/10\/COC-2020-Image-6.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"696\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/10\/COC-2020-Image-6.png 1200w, https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/10\/COC-2020-Image-6-300x174.png 300w, https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/10\/COC-2020-Image-6-1024x594.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/10\/COC-2020-Image-6-768x445.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>While the COC audience continues to decline, they have managed to keep their revenue remarkably stable. The pandemic resulted in the COC cancelling a number of fundraising events, including OperaNation: Opera Club in May 2020, which would have generated some much-needed funds.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-69524\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/10\/COC-2020-Image-9.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"696\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/10\/COC-2020-Image-9.png 1200w, https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/10\/COC-2020-Image-9-300x174.png 300w, https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/10\/COC-2020-Image-9-1024x594.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/10\/COC-2020-Image-9-768x445.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Like all major arts organizations, the COC relies on its foundation to balance the books. As of December 31, 2019, the COC\u2019s Foundation\u2019s endowment is sitting at<strong> $42.3 M<\/strong>, up from last year&#8217;s <strong>$39.8 M<\/strong>. The COC pulled just under <strong>$3.4 M <\/strong>from the foundation in grants, and received <strong>$630,000<\/strong> <strong>\u00a0<\/strong>in donations and bequests.<\/p>\n<p>All told, like everyone in the event sector, the COC has been heavily impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. But considering the pandemic landed at the end of the COC&#8217;s season, the impact could have been much, much worse.
