The Canadian Opera Company<\/strong> (COC) has announced they have cancelled all in-person events through the fall of its 2020\/2021 season.<\/p>\n

\u201cSince the cancellation of our\u00a0spring season<\/a>\u00a0back in March, we have been actively exploring every option regarding what our return to the stage might look like in our current reality,\u201d says COC General Director Alexander Neef<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was much to consider,\u201d\u00a0Neef\u00a0explained. \u201cOpera gathers talent from all around the world to work together in close quarters, requires an extensive rehearsal schedule, plenty of advance planning, and \u2013 to remain economically viable \u2013 an auditorium full of people, without whom no live performance is complete. Taking all of these factors into account, plus the many unknowns around public health guidelines in the fall, this was the only viable course of action to ensure the continued safety of our artists, staff, and audiences.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cancelled programming includes all mainstage productions slated to run between September 25 \u2013 November 7, 2020: Wagner\u2019s\u00a0Parsifal<\/em><\/strong>,\u00a0(rescheduled for 2022\/2023), and Mozart\u2019s\u00a0The Marriage of Figaro<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI realize that Parsifal\u2019s<\/em> cancellation for this season will initially come as a disappointment to many,\u201d says Neef. \u201cThis production caps a decade-long, community-led effort to stage Wagner\u2019s final work here, and we are so thankful for the ongoing support of our donors. The passion and commitment of our Monumental Campaign supporters has ensured that we can bring Parsifal to our stage, and it is thanks to them that we can still share this magnificent opera with Canadian audiences in the near future.\u201d<\/p>\n

The world premiere of the COC\u2019s Opera for Young Audiences,\u00a0Fantasma<\/em><\/strong>, will be rescheduled to a later date in the 2020\/2021 season. The annual Ensemble Studio Competition<\/strong> and Centre Stage Gala<\/strong> have also been cancelled.<\/p>\n

The COC\u2019s Free Concert Series<\/strong> in the Richard Bradshaw Amphitheatre will continue in a digital format. All Education & Outreach<\/strong> activities have been paused until further notice.<\/p>\n

Events previously scheduled for the 2021 year will continue as planned. These include Bizet\u2019s\u00a0Carmen<\/em><\/strong>, Jan\u00e1\u010dek\u2019s\u00a0Katya Kabanova<\/em><\/strong>, Verdi\u2019s\u00a0La Traviata<\/em><\/strong>, and Gluck\u2019s\u00a0Orfeo ed Euridice<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Ticket holders will have the option of donating tickets, converting their value to a gift certificate credit that will never expire, or receiving a full refund.<\/p>\n
