Esprit Orchestra has appointed Toronto-based composer Eugene Astapov to take on the role of Esprit\u2019s RBC Associate Composer\/Conductor for the 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 seasons.<\/p>\n

Launched this year, the RBC Associate Composer\/Conductor Program aims to provide mentoring and practical, professional leadership training and experience for an emerging conductor who is also a composer.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am thrilled to have been appointed Esprit\u2019s inaugural Composer\/Conductor Associate,\u201d said Astapov. \u201cOne of my foremost artistic goals is to nurture and promote the music of living composers.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEugene is an excellent match for this initiative and will help advance Esprit\u2019s connection to the world of emerging composers,\u201d said Founding Music Director and Conductor, Alex Pauk. \u201cHis well-crafted music has lasting value and he has proven potential to make a strong impact as a conductor of new music.\u201d<\/p>\n

This two-year position includes opportunities to write a new work for the full orchestra, to conduct selected pieces at public concerts, to interact with Canadian and international composers, and to connect with stakeholders, audiences and the media.<\/p>\n

Astapov is the Grand Prize winner of the 2019 SOCAN Foundation\u2019s Young Composer Awards, and holds degrees from Julliard, Eastman, and The University of Toronto.<\/p>\n
