The Canadian Opera Company (COC) has circulated a response to the recent media speculation prompted by a news report from\u00a020 Minutes France<\/em><\/a><\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0Le Monde<\/em><\/a><\/span>. The reports state Paris Opera General Director, St\u00e9phane Lissner, will be stepping down early in the wake of a 40M \u20ac deficit due in part to strike action earlier in the year.<\/p>\n

Le Monde<\/em>\u00a0further speculated that COC\u2019s General Director, Alexander Neef,\u00a0could be beginning his appointment in Paris as early as January 2021.<\/p>\n

\u201cI certainly did not anticipate Lissner\u2019s early departure,\u201d says Neef in a press release statement. \u201cI have not yet had any formal discussions \u2014 either with the Paris Opera or members of our Board of Directors \u2014 about accelerating the start of my engagement in Paris. Moreover, the ongoing global health crisis makes it difficult to envision how any significant changes to the intended timeline could be accommodated.\u201d<\/p>\n

Neef was to\u00a0succeed<\/a><\/span>\u00a0St\u00e9phane Lissner beginning in September 2021, and will be remaining in Toronto through the close of the 2020\/2021 COC season. Neef\u2019s appointment required him cut his recent contract\u00a0extension<\/a><\/span>\u00a0with the COC short by five years (2025\/2026).<\/p>\n

\u201cThe COC continues to navigate an extraordinarily challenging time for the performing arts industry, and that is where my focus is centred right now,\u201d adds Neef. \u201cI remain committed to our company and the work before us.\u201d<\/p>\n
