(Photo: Keith Ian Polakoff)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>American composer Anthony Davis\u2019 2019 opera <em>The Central Park Five<\/em> has been awarded one of the world\u2019s highest honours.<\/p>\n<p>Known for his operas that incorporate themes of race and injustice, Anthony Davis\u2019 opera tells the story of five innocent African American and Latino kids between the ages of 14 and 16 who were unjustly convicted of the rape of a jogger in New York\u2019s Central Park in 1989. The five were eventually exonerated through DNA evidence after being incarcerated for 13 years.<\/p>\n<p>The opera was described by the Pulitzer jury as, &#8220;a courageous operatic work, marked by powerful vocal writing and sensitive orchestration, that skillfully transforms a notorious example of contemporary injustice into something empathetic and hopeful.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/I8aEFbLLixY?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<p>The opera premiered\u00a0in 2016 at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark. A revised version of the opera premiered at California&#8217;s\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000\" href=\"https:\/\/www.longbeachopera.org\/the-season\/central-park-five\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Long Beach Opera<\/a><\/span> in June of last year.<\/p>\n<p>Before <em>The Central Park Five<\/em>, Davis captured attention with <em>X, The Life and Times of Malcolm X<\/em>, and\u00a0<em>Amistad<\/em>, a story of a slave revolt on 19th-century Spanish schooner.
