\"Soundstreams<\/p>\n

Amid the doom and gloom of concert cancellations and layoffs of musicians due to COVID-19, Toronto is in short supply of concrete plans for concerts.<\/p>\n

Sensing the need for something to look forward to, Soundstreams has announced its 2020-12 season filled with marquee-worthy highlights.<\/p>\n

\u201cNext season is all about human connection through storytelling,\u201d said Artistic Director Lawrence Cherney. \u201cAs the world grapples with forced separations of all kinds, celebrating what brings us together matters more than ever.\u201d<\/p>\n

Arguably the biggest surprise is a rare live appearance of Steve Reich on April 10 at Koerner Hall. Reich will join the Nexus Percussion and TorQ Percussion Quartet for a celebration of his 85th birthday. Reich\u00a0last appeared<\/a><\/span>\u00a0in Toronto in 2016 for a sold-out show at Massey Hall. Expect this to sell-out too.<\/p>\n

The season also includes some partnerships, including\u00a0Book of Mountains and Seas\u00a0<\/em>by Chinese composer Huang Ruo at the Royal Conservatory\u2019s 21C Festival on Jan. 22. The one-night-only concert will include life-size puppetry backed by vocal ensemble Ars Nova Copenhagen. Direction and staging is by Basil Twist.<\/p>\n

There is also a springtime co-production with Tapestry Opera for an outdoor performance of\u00a0Dragon\u2019s Tale\u00a0<\/em>by composer Chan Ka Nin on June 17\u201320. Described as a \u201cwaterfront opera\u201d you\u2019ll hear an amalgam of music, opera, ritual, and sport.<\/p>\n

Soundstreams are bringing T\u00f5nu Kaljuste to Toronto on Oct. 24 to conduct Arvo P\u00e4rt’s\u00a0Stabat Mater<\/em>. Soloists are Jacqueline Woodley (soprano), Andrea Ludwig (mezzo-soprano), Asitha Tennekoon (tenor), and Justin Welsh (baritone).<\/p>\n

The season also includes a show of force from local musicians in\u00a0Shiraz<\/em>\u00a0on May 4\u20135 with works by Claude Vivier and Christopher Mayo.<\/p>\n

Not to be overlooked, are Quiet Time<\/em> (Nov. 21) with songwriter, singer Robin Dann curating an evening of music and performance inspired by the quietest sounds in the world around us, and\u00a0Electric Messiah<\/em>\u00a0(now a tradition) at the Drake on Dec 8-10.<\/p>\n
