Gimeno will conduct a total of 20 of the 44 events (not including repeats), with the majority of duties going to various guest conductors, RBC Resident Conductor Simon Rivard, and returning visits from Peter Oundjian and Sir Andrew Davis.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the limited appearances, the season programming hasn\u2019t looked this strong in years.<\/p>\n<p>The excitement includes a number of brand name soloists ahead: Yo-Yo Ma, Nicola Benedetti, Yefim Bronfman, Sheku Kanneh-Mason, Juan Manuel Ca\u00f1izares, James Ehnes, Karina Gauvin, V\u00edkingur \u00d3lafsson, Javier Perianes, Daniil Trifonov, and Jan Lisiecki.<\/p>\n<p>Season programming is equally robust with a semi-staged Verdi\u2019s Rigoletto, by Joel Ivany, Mahler <em>Symphonies No. 1<\/em> and <em>No. 4<\/em>, an all J.S. Bach program led by concertmaster Jonathan Crow, and Brucker\u2019s <em>Symphony No. 4<\/em> \u201cRomantic\u201d, which marks the start of a multi-year Bruckner cycle.<\/p>\n<p>Repertoire mainstays are Holst\u2019s <em>The Planets<\/em>, Dvo\u0159\u00e1k\u2019s <em>Symphony No. 9<\/em> \u201cFrom the New World\u201d, Mozart\u2019s <em>Symphony No. 41<\/em> \u201cJupiter\u201d, Tchaikovsky\u2019s <em>Symphony No. 6<\/em> \u201cPath\u00e9tique\u201d and No. 4, Prokofiev\u2019s <em>Romeo and Juliet<\/em>, Stravinsky\u2019s The <em>Rite of Spring<\/em>, Brahms\u2019s <em>Symphony No. 1<\/em>, Shostakovich\u2019s <em>Symphonies No. 5<\/em> and <em>No. 9<\/em>, and Elgar\u2019s <em>Variation on an Original Theme <\/em>\u201cEnigma\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Beethoven 250th anniversary year will continue next season with the complete incidental music to Goethe\u2019s play <em>Egmont, Symphony No. 2<\/em>, as well as a few curious commissions inspired by Beethoven from composers Unsuk Chin and Barbara Croall.<\/p>\n<p>With the quiet\u00a0decision to disband\u00a0the TSO\u2019s New Creations Festival in 2018, the TSO has decided to focus on programming living composers across the general season calendar.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_66266\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-66266\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-66266\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/02\/Reich_Marsalis_Higdon.jpg\" alt=\"Steve Reich \u2013 Wynton Marsalis \u2013 Jennifer Higdon\" width=\"1200\" height=\"628\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/02\/Reich_Marsalis_Higdon.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/02\/Reich_Marsalis_Higdon-300x157.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/02\/Reich_Marsalis_Higdon-1024x536.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/02\/Reich_Marsalis_Higdon-768x402.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-66266\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Steve Reich \u2013 Wynton Marsalis \u2013 Jennifer Higdon<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The 2020-21 season will include four Canadian premi\u00e8res by minimalist superstar Steve Reich, jazz great Wynton Marsalis, Grammy Award winner Jennifer Higdon, and Danish composer Hans Abrahamsen. Co-commissions include works by Barbara Croall (with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra), and Nicole Liz\u00e9e (with the National Arts Centre Orchestra).<\/p>\n<p>Composer\/Conductor Samy Moussa has been named as TSO\u2019s inaugural Artist in Residence, so we can expect to hear a lot more from him with five of his works planned. From engaging children in schools and seniors in long-term care facilities, to partnering in health and wellness initiatives in under-served communities, Daniel will foster broad and meaningful connections to music,\u201d said Matthew Loden, CEO of the TSO, in a press release statement.<\/p>\n<p>The commitment will also feature the TSO opening up lunchtime open rehearsals at Roy Thomson Hall, and school concerts for high school students in the GTA.<\/p>\n<p>With the news of the TSO\u2019s <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/2019\/10\/23\/scoop-tso-announces-end-sight-black-cloud-deficit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">operating surplus<\/a><\/span> this year, a smart <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/2018\/04\/30\/the-scoop-toronto-symphony-orchestra-names-matthew-loden-new-ceo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">new CEO<\/a><\/span>, and the beginnings of a new relationship with a <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/2019\/06\/29\/scrutiny-solid-showing-by-gustavo-gimeno-in-suspect-tso-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">brilliant young conductor<\/a><\/span>, we look forward to a new exciting chapter in the life of the TSO.<\/p>\n<p>The TSO\u2019s 2020-21 season kicks off September 23 with Mahler\u2019s <em>Symphony 1<\/em>, Mozart\u2019s <em>La clemenza di Tito<\/em>\u00a0sung by opera-world favourite mezzo-soprano Emily D\u2019Angelo, and\u00a0<em>Crimson for Large Orchestra<\/em>\u00a0by Montreal-born conductor and composer Samy Moussa.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"western\"><em>#LUDWIGVAN<\/em><\/h3>\n<p class=\"western\"><em>Want more updates on classical music and opera news and reviews?
