The Canadian Opera Company (COC) has named five students to the 2020 Orchestra Academy.<\/p>\n

Headed by COC Music Director Johannes Debus, the program offers students first-hand professional experience working in an opera pit orchestra.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s cohort includes five string students from The Glenn Gould School (Isabel Lago, Ah Young Kim, John Sellick, Mansur Kadirov) and one bass student from the University of Toronto Faculty of Music (Peter Eratostene).<\/p>\n

The students will be paired up with orchestra mentors and gain professional performance experience, including participating in the COC\u2019s upcoming production of Humperdinck\u2019s Hansel & Gretel<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Student mentors include COC orchestra members Marie B\u00e9rard and Dominique Laplante (first violins), Aaron Schwebel (second violin), and Catherine Gray (viola), Paul Widner (cello), and Tony Flynt (bass).<\/p>\n

Other opportunities include:<\/p>\n

\u2022 A recital of Ralph Vaughan Williams\u2019 Songs of Travel<\/em> and select instrumental chamber works with artists of the COC Ensemble Studio on January 29 as part of the COC\u2019s Free Concert Series.<\/p>\n

\u2022 An introduction to the physicality of opera through sessions with the COC\u2019s Performance Kinetics Consultant Jennifer Swan<\/p>\n

\u2022 An exploration of the concept and themes of the opera with Hansel & Gretel<\/em> Assistant Director and COC Director\/Dramaturg-in-Residence Julie McIsaac.<\/p>\n

\u2022 A behind-the-scenes tour of the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts led by the COC Associate Technical Director Jake Gow to introduce players to the technical aspects of a production<\/p>\n

The annual orchestra training intensive program takes place between January 16 \u2013 February 8, 2020.<\/p>\n
