Bottom, l-r:<br \/>Against the Grain, Ayre; Philip Sly &amp; Chimera (images courtesy of the artists)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s people doing interesting, important, vital pieces.\u201d <strong>Mervon Mehta<\/strong>, Executive Director, Performing Arts for The Royal Conservatory, is talking about the upcoming seventh iteration of the 21C Music Festival.<\/p>\n<p>21C Music Festival brightens the post-holiday landscape with three weeks of contemporary music, presenting <strong>eight concerts over three weekends<\/strong> from <strong>Saturday, January 11 to Saturday, January 25, 2020<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The Festival lives up to its billing of presenting \u201cnewly minted music\u201d with a program that includes <strong>five world premieres<\/strong>, along with<strong> one North American<\/strong> and <strong>four Canadian premieres<\/strong>. Of the five world premieres, four involve Canadian composers (Allison Au, Barbara Croall, Ryan Davis, and Bekah Simms) and one American (John Patitucci).<\/p>\n<p>Within the idea of presenting new music, Mehta leaves the door open to multiple styles and genres. \u201cFrom the beginning, we never wanted to pigeonhole this,\u201d he explains. \u201cMost of it is classical in form.\u201d He points out the inclusion of a tabla concerto and jazz in the program. \u201cIt\u2019s part of the mix.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s Toronto audiences that drive the adventurous programming. \u201cI think people are catholic in their tastes,\u201d he says. \u201cWe love mixing it up.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_65544\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-65544\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-65544\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/12\/Laurie-Anderson_EbruYildiz.jpg\" alt=\"Laurie Anderson\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/12\/Laurie-Anderson_EbruYildiz.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/12\/Laurie-Anderson_EbruYildiz-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/12\/Laurie-Anderson_EbruYildiz-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/12\/Laurie-Anderson_EbruYildiz-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-65544\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Laurie Anderson (Image : Ebru Yildiz)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Among the offerings this year, the biggest name is that of American arts icon <strong>Laurie Anderson<\/strong>. According to Mehta, she\u2019s been on his radar for as long as there has been a 21C Festival. \u201cI\u2019ve been an admirer and fan of hers forever,\u201d says Mehta. There were a few attempts in the past where schedules didn\u2019t line up before they meshed for 2020. \u201cThe good news is that she\u2019ll be here for several days,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s one of those wonderfully lovely artists,\u201d he says. Mehta describes how he got a message through her agent to call her directly to talk about programming. \u201cEverything was wide open,\u201d he says. \u201cThat\u2019s not normal.\u201d Over several phone calls, they hammered out the program.<\/p>\n<p>While the January 18 Canadian premiere of Anderson&#8217;s solo works and collaborations with long time music partner, <strong>cellist Rubin Kodheli<\/strong> \u2014 titled <em>The Art of Falling<\/em> \u2014 has been sold out for some time, there are other opportunities to see Anderson and experience her work.<\/p>\n<p>For those lucky enough to already have a ticket, Anderson describes The Art of Falling program in her own words:<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>The Art of Falling<\/em> is an extended improvisation for viola, cello, and electronics. Hypnotic stories, politics, and dreams weave in and out of the music. My ambition with <em>The Art of Falling<\/em> is to make a piece that is one long sentence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Along with her own performance, Anderson will be working with musicians from The Glenn Gould School. For <span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/event\/royal-conservatory-21c-music-festival-21c-cinq-sept\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>21C Cinq \u00e0 Sept<\/em><\/a><\/span>, an early concert (5 p.m.) on January 18, they will perform the <strong>Canadian premiere<\/strong> of her composition <em>Shutter Island.<\/em> Also on the bill are the Canadian premiere of <strong>Kaija Saariaho<\/strong>\u2019s <em>Laconisme de l\u2019aile<\/em>, the world premiere of<strong> Ryan Davis<\/strong>\u2019s latest work for viola, voice, and live electronics, and <strong>Christos Hatzis<\/strong>\u2019s \u201cThe Mega4 Meta4\u201d from <em>Earthrise<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The Royal Ontario Museum will host <strong><em>Laurie Anderson: To The Moon<\/em><\/strong> from January 11 to 25. The 15-minute installation, developed with Taiwanese artist <strong>Hsin-Chien Huang<\/strong>, takes viewers on a virtual reality trip to the surface of the moon set to Anderson\u2019s music.<\/p>\n<p>On January 19, the Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema will screen Anderson\u2019s 2015 film <em>Heart of a Dog<\/em>. The movie focuses on the death of her dog Lolabelle in 2011, and takes viewers on a journey through love and loss set to her music. Anderson will be on hand for a post-screening talk hosted by Mehta.<\/p>\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/F9VB4bY4bKc?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<p>Fans of new classical music will get a broad menu of concerts. \u201cThere is certainly a base of <strong>contemporary classical<\/strong>,\u201d Mehta says.<\/p>\n<p>Joel Ivany\u2019s <strong>Against the Grain Theatre<\/strong> kicks off 21C on January 11 with <span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/event\/royal-conservatory-21c-music-festival-grain-theatres-ayre-works-osvaldo-golijov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Ayre and other works by Osvaldo Golijov<\/em><\/a><\/span>. Golijov is a noted Argentinian composer with two Grammys for composition under his belt, among many other accolades. AtG mines his catalog of work, known for interweaving Middle Eastern and Mediterranean folk melodies into a unique sound. Along with the JUNO-nominated <em>Ayre<\/em>, the program also includes other Golijov works such as <em>Mariel<\/em>, <em>K\u2019vakarat<\/em>, and <em>Tenebrae.<\/em> Canadian soprano <strong>Miriam Khalil<\/strong> stars. Live music is performed by a who\u2019s who of jazz and classical musicians, including Jamey Haddad (percussion), Barry Shiffman (violin and viola), Michael Ward-Bergman (accordion), Juan Gabriel Olivares (clarinet) Beverley Johnston (percussion), Jeremy Flower (laptop and electronics), Roberto Occhipinti (bass), and Cantor Alex Stein.<\/p>\n<p>Violinist <strong>V\u00e9ronique Mathieu<\/strong> follows with a late evening concert at Temerty Theatre the same day (January 11). \u201cV\u00e9ronique is an artist we really like working with,\u201d Mehta says. After appearing in the Festival as a performer on multiple occasions, she was given the opportunity to put together her own concert. The evening format opens up different options. \u201cYou can be a little more adventurous,\u201d Mehta explains.<\/p>\n<p>For <em><strong>21C Afterhours<\/strong><\/em>, Mathieu and pianist <strong>Stephanie Chua<\/strong> perform a program they\u2019ve entitled <em>True North<\/em>. Work by Derek Johnson and Canadian composer <strong>Adam Scime<\/strong> will be on the bill, along with the Canadian premiere of <em>4 Seasons<\/em> by <strong>Alice Ping Yee Ho<\/strong>. The concert will also include the world premiere of a piece by Odawa First Nations composer<strong>\u00a0Barbara Croall<\/strong>, co-commissioned by The Royal Conservatory<\/p>\n<p>JUNO Award-nominated composer \u2014 and rising star in the classical music world \u2014 <span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?time_continue=1&amp;v=VGc8rMktY40&amp;feature=emb_logo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Bekah Simms<\/strong><\/a><\/span> is one of the Canadians premiering work at the Festival. \u201cBekah is someone who is getting quite well known,\u201d Mehta notes. On January 19, the Glenn Gould School New Music Ensemble performs <em>For Michael Colgrass,<\/em> a concert in honour of the late Toronto-based composer and music educator. P\u00e9rez is the Founder and Artistic Director of the Panama Jazz Festival, as well as Founder and Artistic Director of the Berklee Global Jazz Institute in Boston\u2019s Berklee College of Music, among other things.<\/p>\n<p>On the 25th, he\u2019s bringing his <strong>Global Messengers<\/strong> project, including musicians from Palestine, Greece, Jordan, and Panama for the <strong>Canadian premiere<\/strong> of his piece <em>Fronteras (Borders)<\/em> and other selections. <strong>Juno Award-winning saxophonist Allison Au<\/strong> and her quartet open the concert with the world premiere of her composition <em>Migrations<\/em>. Vocalist <strong>Laila Biali<\/strong> is a special guest performer.<\/p>\n<p>The night before, on January 24, P\u00e9rez takes part in a unique concert that brings two traditions together \u2014 classical Indian music and contemporary jazz. <strong>Zakir Hussain<\/strong> is one of the world\u2019s most renowned tabla virtuosi, a composer, producer, and film actor. His father was legendary tabla player Ustad Allah Rakha. \u201cHe\u2019s a curious, intrepid musician,\u201d Mehta says. \u201cThe public adores him.\u201d The concert begins with an improv sessions involving Hussain, P\u00e9rez, bassist, John Patitucci, and Brian Blade on drums. \u201cNo one\u2019s ever going to see that except at Koerner Hall,\u201d Mehta notes.<\/p>\n<p>Next, Hussain will perform the <strong>Canadian premiere<\/strong> of<em> Peshkar<\/em>, his tabla concerto, with <strong>Zane Dalal,<\/strong> Music Director of the National Symphony Orchestra of India, conducting the Royal Conservatory Orchestra. P\u00e9rez, Patitucci, and Blade return to premiere Patitucci\u2019s <em>Hypocrisy for orchestra and jazz trio<\/em> for the second half of the concert.<\/p>\n<p>Canadian bass-baritone <span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/event\/royal-conservatory-21c-music-festival-philippe-sly-le-chimera-project-winterreise\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Philippe Sly is bringing his Chimera Project<\/strong><\/a><\/span> to the Festival for a performance of <em>Winterreise 2020<\/em>. \u201cI think he\u2019s a terrific young singer,\u201d Mehta says. Concert and theatrical performance mesh in a 21st century take on Schubert\u2019s masterpiece for voice. The song cycle consists of 24 songs based on poems by Wilhelm M\u00fcller, and is fully staged in an arrangement for violin, clarinet, trombone, and accordion. The musicians and performers move around the stage as the performance unfolds.
