The Canadian Opera Company (COC) has tapped stage director, dramaturg, playwright\/librettist, and multi-instrumentalist Julie McIsaac as the inaugural Director\/Dramaturg-in-Residence.<\/p>\n
\u201cJulie\u2019s voice as a storyteller is wonderfully textured,\u201d says COC General Director Alexander Neef. \u201cWith her background in classical piano, voice, languages, and theatre, she is uniquely equipped for the challenge of staging new opera that shakes up all expectations of the genre for today\u2019s audiences.\u201d<\/p>\n
McIsaac will join the COC Academy for a year-long residency with the professional development program for young opera artists, creators, and administrators.<\/p>\n
\u201c{Toronto}\u2026is where I first heard a full orchestra, and where I first experienced the power of storytelling on a large stage. I have memories of being 16 years old and standing in line for hours for student rush tickets \u2014 and then being so moved by the music that I wept until the collar of my sweater was soaked.\u201d<\/p>\n
McIsaac will collaborate with COC Composer-in-Residence Ian Cusson on the creation of an opera for young audiences, with a libretto by award-winning Canadian playwright Colleen Murphy.<\/p>\n
\u201cIan hails from my hometown,\u201d says McIsaac. \u201cOur grandparents played music together, and it\u2019s beautiful to feel that we\u2019re connected to them through our creative collaboration now.\u201d<\/p>\n
McIsaac will also serve as assistant director alongside Against the Grains Theatre director Joel Ivany and dramaturg Katherine Syer on the COC\u2019s production of Humperdinck\u2019s Hansel & Gretel<\/em>.
