Launched in 2018, the biannual Johanna Metcalf Performing Arts Prize aims to provide impactful artists in Ontario much need support.<\/p>\n

The award is named after well-known philanthropist Johanna Metcalf<\/a><\/span>, who passed away in 2018. Metcalf maintained a deep love of the arts expressed through the Metcalf Foundation, which she developed for over 40 years.<\/p>\n

The inaugural winners are Sunny Drake<\/strong> (playwright and theatre creator), Alice Ping Yee Ho<\/strong> (composer and classical pianist), James Rolfe<\/strong> (composer), Santee Smith<\/strong> (multidisciplinary artist), and Maryem Tollar<\/strong> (performer and composer).<\/p>\n

Each artist will receive $25,000 bestowed at a gala event on December 12, 2019, at Toronto\u2019s Artscape Daniels Launchpad.<\/p>\n

As per the award, the five winners have selected a prot\u00e9g\u00e9 to receive an additional $5,000 to help further their creative work.<\/p>\n

They are Bilal Baig<\/strong> \u2014\u00a0playwright, director, and actor (prot\u00e9g\u00e9 of Sunny Drake), Cody Berry<\/strong> \u2014 Dance artist (prot\u00e9g\u00e9 of Santee Smith), Demetri Petsalaki<\/strong> \u2014 Musician (prot\u00e9g\u00e9 of Maryem Tollar), Roydon Tse<\/strong> \u2014 Pianist and Composer (prot\u00e9g\u00e9 of Alice Ping Yee Ho), and Sophie Dupuis<\/strong> \u2014 Composer (prot\u00e9g\u00e9 of James Rolfe).<\/p>\n

\u201cThe goal of the Metcalf Prizes is to celebrate, elevate, and recognize performing artists in Ontario, and in part, alleviate some of the financial pressure that artists face, while supporting them in their careers,\u201d said Sandy Houston, President and CEO, Metcalf Foundation.<\/p>\n

The five winners have been chosen from fifteen finalists from across Ontario. The winners include artists in the disciplines of dance, theatre, and music\/opera, and have been producing and showing work for at least ten years.<\/p>\n
