Saunders)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">C<\/span>anadian pianist <strong>Angela Hewitt<\/strong> has made history today as the first women to be awarded the prestigious <strong>City of Leipzig Bach Medal<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;\u2026Never since the Canadian Glenn Gould has there been an artist who has placed Bach interpretations on the modern concert piano at the centre of their work as much as Gould\u2019s compatriot, Angela Hewitt. \u2026&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FWQYLsuR6nE?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<p>Hewitt has commanded a respect as one of the world\u2019s foremost interpreters of the keyboard works for Bach, particularly her recordings between 1994 and 2005.<\/p>\n<p>The award will be bestowed on <strong>June 20 by the Mayor of the City of Leipzig<\/strong> during a gala concert for <strong>Bachfest 2020<\/strong>, where she will also perform the Bach\u2019s <em>Goldberg Variations<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo receive such an award from the city which is synonymous with Johann Sebastian Bach, and to be added to such a distinguished list of former recipients, is more than I could ever have imagined,\u201d Hewitt wrote in a statement announced on the BachFest Leipzig <span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/bacharchiv\/posts\/2507903405990068\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Facebook page<\/a><\/span>. \u201c\u2026It has given me great happiness to take Bach to all corners of the globe, and to see the comfort and joy it brings people of all backgrounds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hewitt dedicated the award to her parents, who \u201cboth adored Bach and Leipzig \u2014 especially my organist father who made Bach so alive to me as a child.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Bach Medal laureates include Klaus Mertens (2019), Robert D. Levin (2018), Nikolaus Harnoncourt (2007) Sir John Eliot Gardiner (2005), Helmuth Rilling (2004) and Gustav Leonhardt (2003).<\/p>\n<p>The concert is sponsored by the\u00a0Canada Council for the Arts.
