He laid the foundations of our national music,\u201d<\/strong> <strong>says pianist and composer Serouj Kradjian.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>TORONTO, CANADA &#8211; October 10, 2019\u00a0<\/strong>\u2014 <strong>Amici Chamber Ensemble<\/strong> and <strong>The Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) <\/strong>are proud to present <strong><em>Komitas: A Canadian Tribute<\/em><\/strong><em>,<\/em> <strong>Friday, October 25\u00a0at 8 p.m.<\/strong> in <strong>Koerner Hall<\/strong>, Toronto Ontario Canada. This multi-faceted celebration commemorates the 150<sup>th<\/sup> birthday of Father Komitas, a composer and pioneer of ethnomusicology, who was widely admired for combining traditional music and progressive musical trends of his time.<\/p>\n<p><em>Komitas: A Canadian Tribute<\/em>\u00a0might well become the biggest event outside of Armenia dedicated entirely to his music. Amici Chamber Ensemble (clarinetist <strong>Joaquin Valdepe\u00f1as<\/strong>, cellist <strong>David Hetherington<\/strong> and pianist <strong>Serouj Kradjian<\/strong>) will be joined by a stellar line-up of non-Armenian artists, including acclaimed Canadian baritone <strong>Russell Braun<\/strong>, Canada\u2019s revered chamber choir the <strong>Elmer Iseler Singers<\/strong>, <strong>Canadian Children\u2019s Opera Company<\/strong>,<strong> Young Voices Toronto<\/strong>, soprano <strong>Lynn Isnar<\/strong>, violinist <strong>Mark Fewer<\/strong>, violist <strong>Barry Shiffman<\/strong> and dancers from <strong>Hamazkayin Toronto \u201cErepuni\u201d Dance Ensemble<\/strong>. There will be more than 80 performers on stage.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cOther than his beautiful and profound music, which I believe will deeply resonate with Armenians and non-Armenians alike, the audience at Koerner Hall and around the world through the livestream, will come face-to-face with a relatively unknown cultural icon, a visionary, whose story and legacy is yet another undeniable proof that the human mind and soul is unbeatable and unbreakable, when guided by noble principles, however impossible they may seem to attain. &#8216;So much beauty in its simplicity&#8217; and, &#8216;balm for the soul&#8217; are comments I\u2019ve heard many times over the years from non-Armenian artists and performers about the music of Komitas. Through these songs and sacred hymns, Komitas created a melodic and harmonic language which sounds neither Western nor Eastern. It sounds unique and timeless. The songs I\u2019ve chosen represent his love for village life and nature, the joyful songs and dances at weddings, his devotion to music for children, his life as a priest, his special relationship with French composer Claude Debussy, his agony during the Genocide, and falling silent as a result. Of course, all his \u201chits\u201d such as<\/em> <em>Tsiranee tsar, Krunk, Garun a, Antuni, Keler-Tsoler, Hoy Nazan, Surb-Surb are included, alongside lesser known songs such as the Children\u2019s Prayer, which he composed during his deportation, and which ended up being his very last composition.\u201d Serouj Kradjian<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This ambitious project is a continuation of Kradjian\u2019s work on the Grammy Award-nominated album <em>Gomidas Songs<\/em> and the resulting North American tour, effectively introducing this music to a wider non-Armenian audience.<\/p>\n<p><strong>About Amici Chamber Ensemble:<\/strong> <strong>The Amici Chamber Ensemble is celebrating its 32<sup>nd<\/sup> anniversary as one of Canada\u2019s finest and most distinguished music ensembles. <\/strong>Artistic Directors clarinetist Joaquin Valdepe\u00f1as, cellist David Hetherington and pianist Serouj Kradjian invite some of the finest musicians to join them in innovative and eclectic programming, celebrating friendship through music.<strong> Visit: <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amiciensemble.com\">www.amiciensemble.com<\/a> <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Joaqu\u00edn Valdepe\u00f1as<\/em><\/strong> is regarded as one of the most distinguished clarinetists of his generation. He is also a prolific music teacher and coach nationally. He is said to play his 1695 cello made by Giovanni Grancino of Milan \u201cwith rare delicacy and clarity\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Serouj Kradjian<\/em><\/strong> is hailed as a \u201ckeyboard acrobat\u201d of \u201ccrystal virtuosity\u201d by the press. His prowess in breaking boundaries as soloist, chamber musician as well as composer and arranger has been praised across North America and Europe.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Royal Conservatory of Music<\/strong> is one of the largest and most respected music and arts education institutions in the world.
