As a prelude, we get a host of fine season-opening concerts:<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>MONDAY<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/cardinalconsort.com\/?page_id=20\" target=\"_blank\">Cardinal Consort of Viols<\/a> at the Church of the Holy Trinity (behind the Eaton Centre), 12:15 p.m.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The modern viola is the last vestige of a whole family of stringed instruments that goes back five centuries. Played as a consort, viols become a gentle, complementary chorus, a sound that inspired many English composers, including John Dowland. I can&#8217;t think of a better meditation break in the middle of a workday (even if it is the first day of the week). You&#8217;ll find full programme details <a href=\"http:\/\/files.coc.ca\/pdfs\/concert120918.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WEDNESDAY<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Organist Michael Bloss at Our Lady of Sorrows, 3055 Bloor St W., 12:15 p.m.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>One of Toronto&#8217;s finest concert organists presents a free lunchtime concert on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ourladyofsorrowstoronto.ca\/pipeorgan.html\" target=\"_blank\">a fine Casavant instrument<\/a> inside a beautiful building with great acoustics.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THURSDAY<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Soprano <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nathaliepaulin.com\/new_site\/frames.php?lang=en&amp;page=accueil.php\" target=\"_blank\">Nathalie Paulin<\/a> and pianist Che Anne Loewen at Walter Hall, University of Toronto, 12:10 p.m.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These two excellent artists pair up for a free lunchtime art song recital plucked from three cycles by Francis Poulenc: <em>M\u00e9tamorphoses<\/em>,\u00a0 <em>Fiancailles pour rire<\/em> and <em>Trois po\u00e8mes de Louise de Vilmorin<\/em>. Prof. Eric Domville introduces.<\/p>\n<p>Here, just for fun, is the world premiere of two piecs from Poulenc&#8217;s song cycle <em>La Courte paille<\/em> (The Short Straw) on French television, with the composer accompanying soprano Denise Duval.<\/p>\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Owf0eW0I3CQ?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<p><strong>THURSDAY &amp; SATURDAY<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jamesehnes.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Violinist James Ehnes<\/a> and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra at Roy Thomson Hall, 8 p.m.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Toronto Symphony Orchestra has chosen the tried-and-true path to open its 2012-13 season in choosing Canadian star James Ehnes (now based in Florida) to breathe his unsurpassed technical control on one of the warhorses of the violin repertoire, the 1878 <em>Violin Concerto<\/em> by Johannes Brahms.<\/p>\n<p>The oddly structured programme led by music director Peter Oundjian starts with the Overture to Giuseppe Verdi&#8217;s <em>La Forza del destino<\/em> and ends with American composer John Adams&#8217; popular &#8212; and gripping &#8212; 1984 symphony H<em>armonielehre<\/em>. Bach&#8217;s <em>Brandenburg Concertos<\/em>. Their Sony recording, recently reissued on Tafelmusik&#8217;s new in-house recording label, continues to set the standard for how this music should be interpreted.<\/p>\n<p>For the orchestra&#8217;s season-opening programme, we get to hear B<em>randenburg Concertos No.1<\/em>, <em>No. 3<\/em> (the one with the fancy violin work) and <em>No. 5<\/em>, which will give Charlotte Nediger an opportunity to show off her skills at the harpsichord.<\/p>\n<p>The programme, led by violinist Jeanne Lamon, is rounded out with Bach&#8217;s brilliant <em>Fourth Orchestral Suite<\/em>, which dates from the same period as the <em>Brandenburgs<\/em> and doesn&#8217;t get performed nearly enough.<\/p>\n<p>Note that the Friday concert is sold out.<\/p>\n<p>For concert details and tickets, click <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tafelmusik.org\/concert-calendar\/concert\/bach-brandenburg-concertos\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SATURDAY<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Claudio Monteverdi&#8217;s <em>Vespers of 1610<\/em> at Metropolitan United Church, 7:30 p.m.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>One of the masterpieces of the early Baroque gets a rare Toronto performance, in a pared-down version that places one instrument per part, featuring a new small vocal ensemble Accenti Vocali and the Elixir Baroque Ensemble. <a href=\"http:\/\/metunited.org\/jmv2\/index.php\/events\/icalrepeat.detail\/2012\/09\/22\/3978\/78|77|79|83\/baroque-and-beyond-monteverdi-vespers-of-1610\" target=\"_blank\">Tickets are $20<\/a>, which mitigates the risk of checking out these brave musicians in the ample acoustics of this large downtown church.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SUNDAY<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>New Music Concerts at the Betty Oliphant Theatre, 8 p.m.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6209\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6209\" style=\"width: 156px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2012\/09\/lance.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6209\" title=\"lance\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2012\/09\/lance.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"156\" height=\"228\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6209\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lawrence Wiliford<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I&#8217;ll have more later in the week on this season-opening programme, which features the premiere of a new piece for tenor (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lawrencewiliford.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lawrence Wiliford<\/a>) and eight cellos by Toronto composer James Rolfe.<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;ll find all the details and ticket information <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newmusicconcerts.com\/page6\/page6.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>(A note to anyone not of average size: the Betty Oliphant Theatre has the most uncomfortable seats in town.)<\/p>\n<p><em>John Terauds<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The big artistic and creative powers come out for Glenn Gould on the weekend, with details coming in a later post.
