The 40th annual awards gala took place on June 25 at the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts.<\/h3>\n

The Dora Mavor Moore Awards (the Dora Awards) awarded their special top prizes last night to Next to Normal<\/em> <\/strong>(produced by The Musical Stage Company<\/strong>, presented by David Mirvish<\/strong>) (recipient of the 2019 Jon Kaplan Audience Choice Award ) and Peggy Baker<\/strong> (The Silver Ticket Award). Hosted by actor Rick Miller, it took place June 25 at the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts.<\/p>\n

This year it was the Canadian Opera Company’s<\/strong> time to shine with seven Dora Awards in the Opera Division: 5 for Eugene Onegin<\/em> (including Outstanding Production and Outstanding Direction); 1 for Hadrian<\/em> (Outstanding New Opera) and 1 for Otello<\/em> (Outstanding Performance of an Individual).<\/p>\n

Against the Grain<\/strong> represented indie opera with 2 Dora Awards for Kopernikus<\/em>: Outstanding Musical Direction for Topher Mokrzewski and Outstanding Performance of an Ensemble to Anne-Marie MacIntosh, Jonelle Sills, Krisztina Szab\u00f3, Bruno Roy, Dion Mazerolle, Alain Coulombe, Anisa Tejpar, William Yong, Brad Cherwin, Marc Blouin, Peter Stoll, Carly Gordon, Michael Fedyshyn, Paul Tarussov and Brenna Hardy-Kavanagh.<\/p>\n

In the competitive General Musical Theatre division, it was\u00a0Soulpepper Theatre<\/strong> who led the pack with four Outstanding Design Awards: three for The Royale<\/em> (Ken MacKenzie, scenic design; Michelle Ramsay, lighting; Thomas Ryder Payne, sound design\/composition) and one for Orlando <\/em>(Gillian Gallow, costume design).<\/p>\n

Obsidian Theatre<\/strong> walked away with two Doras for School Girls; Or, The African Mean Girls Play<\/em> (presented in association with Nightwood Theatre): Outstanding Production and Outstanding Direction to Nina Lee Aquino.<\/p>\n

Tarragon Theatre<\/strong> also landed two Doras: Charlotte Corbeil-Coleman for Outstanding New Play for Guarded Girls<\/em> and Virgilia Griffith for Outstanding Performance in a Leading Role in Harlem Duet.<\/em><\/p>\n

Amaka Umeh from The Howland Company<\/strong> and Crow’s Theatre<\/strong>\u00a0co-production of The Wolves<\/em> took a Dora for Outstanding Performance in a Featured Role.<\/p>\n

It the Dance Division, it was Blood Tides<\/strong> (Outstanding Production and Outstanding Performance of an Ensemble) and Trace<\/strong> (Outstanding Original Choreography and to Eliot Britton for Outstanding Sound Design\/Composition) who tied for two Doras each.<\/p>\n

Andrea Nann took home one Dora for A Crazy Kind of Hope<\/em> (Outstanding Performance of an Individual) \u00c9tienne Boucher earned Outstanding Lighting Design for the National Ballet of Canada\u2019s<\/strong> Frame by Frame<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Winners in the Independent Theatre Division included Makambe K Simamba for Our Fathers, Sons, Lovers<\/em> and Little Brothers<\/em> (Outstanding New Play and Outstanding Performance of an Individual). Chanda Gibson took home a Dora for Outstanding Direction in Les Zinspir\u00e9s: L’\u00e2ge de raison<\/em>. The same production also won Outstanding Performance of an Ensemble.<\/p>\n

The Outstanding Touring Production went to\u00a0Grand Finale<\/em> (a Hofesh Shechter Company<\/strong> production presented by Canadian Stage<\/strong>).<\/p>\n
