Ukrainian-Canadian soprano Andriana Chuchman, currently making a welcome return to the COC as Musetta in La boh<\/em>\u00e8me,<\/em> is giving a noon-hour concert of Ukrainian songs, plus an aria or two, like Susanna\u2019s calling card \u201cDeh vieni non tardar\u201d from Nozze<\/em>.\u00a0 Hyejin Kwon is the pianist. | Details<\/a><\/p>\n

Canadian Opera Company<\/strong> | Otello. 7:30 p.m. Four Seasons Centre, 145 Queen St. W. $45-$350. Seven more performances to May 21.<\/p>\n

Otello<\/em>, the final production of the COC season is a terrific show.\u00a0 A wonderful cast that includes Russell Thomas (Otello), Tamara Wilson (Desdemona), and Gerald Finley (Iago). It also benefits from David Alden\u2019s atmospheric and intense staging, a bit quirky but par for the course. Johannes Debus conducts the COC Orchestra and Chorus. | Details<\/a><\/p>\n

What? No tenors allowed???!\u00a0 When the recital is given by these two great baritones, you won\u2019t miss the tenor. Besides they are keeping it in the family, as Luca is Tom Hampson\u2019s son-in-law! They are singing a fun program from Mozart to Irving Berlin, including \u201cAnything You Can Do\u201d \u2014 probably the first time this duet is tackled by two guys. Hand it to Tongue in Cheek Productions for innovative programming.\u00a0 Ever since this group was founded about a year ago, it has attracted much attention \u2013 Winterreise<\/em> sung by 24 men, one per song? Check. Verbotenlieder <\/em>\u2013 songs that women are not supposed to sing? Check.\u00a0 Now the audience gets to call the shots in Democracy In Action<\/em>. Dominick Argento\u2019s one-act opera, Miss Havisham\u2019s Wedding Night,<\/em> is the revised and shortened version of Miss Havisham\u2019s Fire<\/em>, which I saw at the New York City Opera forty years ago starring coloratura soprano Rita Shane. It\u2019s based on the character in Dicken\u2019s Great Expectations<\/em>. Here it\u2019s paired with Argento\u2019s Waterbird Talk<\/em>.\u00a0 Soprano Brianna DeSantis is Miss Havisham, and baritone Parker Clement is The Lecturer.\u00a0 | Details<\/a><\/p>\n

It is a common metaphor, often used to represent goodness and truth, and has been an inspiration to composers throughout history.
