Against the Grain Theatre release a video of their latest Opera BOUND v. 2: A Handel Mash-up.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Against the Grain Theatre returns with month with the second installment of Bound<\/em><\/strong>, an opera created in collaboration\u00a0with Toronto-based composer Keven Lau<\/strong>. The opera places music inspired by Handel in the\u00a0context of the current state of those displaced, dehumanized and mistreated, with texts and stories drawn from real-life news articles and world events.<\/p>\n

\u201cBringing Handel\u2019s music into the 21st-century is a way for us to directly grapple with the big issues of tradition versus change that face our society today,\u201d said Lau.\u00a0The development of\u00a0BOUND<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0began\u00a0as a mash-up of Handel arias and ensembles used to highlight the current state of those dehumanized and mistreated across the globe. \u201cOur opera does delve into darker themes\u2014among them, the ethical consequences of trading individual freedoms for national security, an issue which grows more relevant every day \u2014 but ultimately our hope is to sow musical seeds of empathy, by finding truth among differences.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bound v.2<\/em> features a new\u00a0English libretto by\u00a0AtG Founder and Artistic Director\u00a0Joel Ivany. <\/strong>The premise is stark but timely, and centres on\u00a0four people detained by an oppressive government.<\/p>\n

This is the second workshop in a multi-year production, with this years team including\u00a0a quartet of singers, chamber orchestra, and digital sound design by Acote.<\/p>\n
