Total Time: 65:42.<\/p>\n<p>One of these days some record company will issue a CD under the title \u201cMusic of the Americas\u201d and actually include some Canadian music. But don\u2019t hold your breath! While we Canadians never forget that we are part of \u2018the Americas\u2019, our good neighbours to the south seem to have a blind spot on this subject.<\/p>\n<p>Another anomaly that struck me as I perused the cover of this album was that the Houston Symphony\u2019s hugely talented music director, Andr\u00e9s Orozco-Estrada, is from Colombia and yet his record company Pentatone didn\u2019t think it logical or appropriate to include music by a Colombian composer on a CD titled \u201cMusic of the Americas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Generally speaking, whoever put together this \u201cMusic of the Americas\u201d collection seems to be totally lacking in imagination: the Bernstein and Gershwin pieces have been recorded literally dozens of times and new versions are simply not needed; <em>Sensemay\u00e1<\/em> by Mexican composer Silvestre Revueltas (1899-1940) is one of the most often played of any piece by a Mexican composer; even <em>Tangazo<\/em>, the only relative novelty on the album, has not lacked for recordings.<\/p>\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XYr9L9oWclo?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<p>Unfortunately, on this recent release, unimaginative programming is coupled with mostly routine performances. The overplayed <em>An American in Paris<\/em> plods along and never really comes alive. The <em>West Side Story<\/em> suite, while it shows signs of life in the Mambo section, is otherwise workmanlike rather than inspiring.
