TSO’s Earl Lee lands appointment as Associate Conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Current Toronto Symphony RBC Resident Conductor Earl Lee\u00a0has been appointed Associate Conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra (PSO), effective September 2018.<\/p>\n

Similar to Lee\u2019s current role with the TSO, the position will require Lee\u00a0to be prepared to fill in on a moment\u2019s notice, and lead community-based orchestra programming. Lee will also assume the post of music director of the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe PSO is such a great organization for me to work with and absorb their style of music-making,\u201d Lee said.<\/p>\n

Raised in\u00a0Toronto,<\/span>\u00a0Lee began his career as a cellist\u00a0in the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra<\/a>.\u00a0After graduating from the\u00a0Curtis Institute of Music<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0the Juilliard School<\/span>\u00a0Lee was diagnosed with Focal dystonia, a neurological condition that causes involuntary contractions and cramping. The condition\u00a0prompted Lee to consider conducting as an alternative. Lee started studying conducting with\u00a0George Manahan<\/span>\u00a0(Manhattan School of Music) and Hugh Wolff<\/span>\u00a0(New England Conservatory of Music), and was awarded the 2013 Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy Scholarship to study with\u00a0Kurt Masur<\/span>\u00a0in\u00a0Leipzig. That same year, Lee\u00a0<\/span>won the prestigious\u00a0 Ansbacher Fellowship for Young Conductors by the American Austrian Foundation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Lee\u00a0joined the Toronto Symphony in 2014 as the RBC Resident Conductor and has established himself as a conductor poised to take a leadership role on the podium of a major symphony orchestra.<\/p>\n

“I have had the pleasure of watching Earl develop as a musician over the past decade,”\u00a0said TSO Music Director\u00a0Peter Oundjian.\u00a0“As an accomplished cellist, he performed with great sensitivity and brilliant artistry.\u00a0 He brings these same instincts to his conducting. He has been expertly taught by\u00a0Hugh Wolff, and I, along with the musicians of the TSO, am thrilled to be a part of the development of Earl’s considerable talent.”<\/p>\n

Lee replaces outgoing PSO Associate Conductor Francesco Lecce-Chong, who has accepted a three-year contract\u00a0as Music Director of the Santa Rosa Symphony.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
