{"id":53,"date":"2011-11-21T21:05:19","date_gmt":"2011-11-22T02:05:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/?p=53"},"modified":"2011-11-21T21:05:19","modified_gmt":"2011-11-22T02:05:19","slug":"cd-review-ryan-scott-and-esprit-orchestra-embrace-maki-ishii-challenge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/2011\/11\/21\/cd-review-ryan-scott-and-esprit-orchestra-embrace-maki-ishii-challenge\/","title":{"rendered":"CD Review: Ryan Scott and Esprit Orchestra embrace Maki Ishii challenge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/ryanscottpercussion.com\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-54 alignright\" title=\"ryanscott\" src=\"http:\/\/207.112.70.56\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/ryanscott.jpg?w=199\" alt=\"\" width=\"199\" height=\"298\" \/><\/a>Ryan Scott, percussion<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Alex Pauk, conductor<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Esprit Orchestra<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>MAKI ISHII LIVE<\/strong> (Innova)<\/p>\n<p>One of the great joys of going to a concert featuring percussion is watching the soloists&#8217; choreography, which is as much a part of the performance as the almost limitless variety of sound and tone they can produce.<\/p>\n<p>Torontonian <a href=\"http:\/\/ryanscottpercussion.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ryan Scott<\/a> is a master, and he displays the full range of his incredible bodily control and subtle shaping of each sound in three pieces by\u00a0 Japanese composer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ishii.de\/maki\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\">Maki Ishii<\/a>: <em>Saidoki (Demon)<\/em>, for percussion and orchestra, written in 1989; <em>Concertante for Marimba Solo<\/em> and 6 percussionists, written for Les Percussions de Strasbourg; and a 1992 percussion <em>Concerto, &#8220;South &#8211; Fire &#8211; Summer<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>There are many hours of re-listening needed here to savour every little detail of these pieces, nicely backed up by Toronto&#8217;s Esprit Orchestra and led by their music director, Alex Pauk. Each piece was recorded at a different time, but the sound quality is excellent.<\/p>\n<p>All that said, the choreography is invisible here. So, I would suggest checking out Scott and the Esprit Orchestra on Nov. 30, in a program that features the <em>Percussion Concerto<\/em>.
