Every so often, MT poses 60 questions to a local or visiting artist who has made our classical music community that much more interesting. They pick and choose. The minimum response is 20 answers. A kind of Rorschach personality test, if you will.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

At the forefront of today\u2019s jazz pianists, Vijay Iyer\u2019s creative output combines disparate domains in a contemporised package. A 2013 MacArthur Fellow, his career spans the humanities, the sciences, and the arts: Iyer holds a Ph.D in cognitive musical science, and is a professor at Harvard University\u2019s Department of Music.<\/p>\n

Born in New York to Indian parents, significant engagements in Canada include performances at the Toronto Jazz Festival and a residency at the University of Toronto Faculty of Music in 2013. He is in his fifth year of artistic directorship of the Banff International Workshop in Jazz and Creative Music at Banff Centre. There,\u00a0MT witnessed Iyer in action performing Radhe Radhe<\/em> with his colleagues and participant student musicians. His latest CD Far From Over<\/em> will be released this month, featuring\u00a0Iyer in a sextet with\u00a0his long-time collaborators, all of whom have also appeared alongside him at Banff Centre.<\/p>\n

Speaking with him\u00a0over the phone, Iyer\u00a0has a remarkably calm speech that is worlds apart from his accomplishments and creative powers on stage.<\/p>\n

The historical personalities that fascinate you the most?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

What is your biggest phobia?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

I\u2019m scared of white supremacists, it\u2019s a pretty legitimate fear.<\/p>\n

The phrase that you overuse?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

I use \u201cwell you know\u2026\u201d a lot to start a sentence, so I\u2019m trying not to do that as much.<\/p>\n

The strangest talent that you possess?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

I seem to be pretty good at the word game \u201cBananagrams,\u201d I only learned this from playing it with my daughter!<\/p>\n

Under what circumstances would you join the army?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

If it were engaged with a coup against the current president.<\/p>\n

How do you know when you can trust someone?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

When you\u2019ve been through unpredictable experiences together, that\u2019s when you see how people really are and whether they\u2019re with you or not.<\/p>\n

What was the luckiest moment in your life?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The moment my daughter was born.<\/p>\n

The talent that you wish you possessed?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

I wish I were more physically coordinated, less klutzy. I can play the piano somewhat<\/em>, but when it comes to navigating the world I\u2019m always bumping into stuff, dropping things, cutting myself.<\/p>\n

What musical instrument do you secretly long to play?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Drums. I know a little bit about playing drums, but I\u2019ve never had the opportunity to sit down and develop these skills. So it\u2019s still kind of a hypothetical instrument for me!<\/p>\n

What is the one animal that scares you the most?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Rats, because I see a lot of them in New York City. They\u2019re gross.<\/p>\n

Scariest situation you\u2019ve ever been in?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

I was assaulted on the street. That was a long time ago.<\/p>\n

Your favourite word?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Joy. (How do you choose one word?)<\/p>\n

Your least favourite phrase?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

\u201cAt the end of the day.\u201d<\/p>\n

Your favourite curse word?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

*laughs* I guess I drop a lot of F-bombs, sometimes when I\u2019m angry. That doesn\u2019t make it my favourite, but\u2026<\/p>\n

The thing that makes you the angriest?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

People jerking me around; being not straightforward with me.<\/p>\n

The thing that makes you the happiest?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Being still.<\/p>\n
