19-year-old cellist Bryan Cheng is the recipient of this year’s Michael Measures Prize. The $25,000 award is offered yearly to a musician in the National Youth Orchestra of Canada in conjunction with the Canada Council for the Arts.<\/p>\n

A native of Ottawa, Cheng has performed at Carnegie Hall, and has appeared with I Musici de Montr\u00e9al. He plays on a 1754 Venetian cello by Bartolomeo Tassini, and forms part of Cheng\u00b2 Duo along with his sister, pianist Silvie Cheng.<\/p>\n

“I’m extremely honoured to be the recipient of the Michael Measures Prize!” Cheng shared in a statement. “I also realize how very fortunate I am as a Canadian to receive support like this that enables me to pursue my dreams.” Cheng aspires to push his music beyond the country: “I’m looking forward to continuing to polish my craft and share the beauty of classical music with audiences not only in this wonderful country, but also those far and beyond!”<\/p>\n

Past winners have indeed gone on to perfect their musical studies abroad, in such destinations as the United States and France. Blake Pouliot, Cameron Crozman, Antoine Malette-Ch\u00e9nier, B\u00e9n\u00e9dicte Lauzi\u00e8re, Daniel Hass, and Hugo Lee number among the recipients in past years for the Prize, which was implemented in 2011.<\/p>\n

The Prize will be formally presented on July 22 in Ottawa, during a NYO Canada concert at the National Arts Centre.<\/p>\n
