At last night\u2019s 38th-annual Dora Mavor Moore Awards at Elgin Theatre, it was Tapestry Opera’s<\/strong> time to shine with a total of five awards in the Opera division, including Outstanding Direction to Michael Mori.<\/p>\n

Hosted by actor and musician Raoul Bhaneja, a total of 129 arts companies and 210 productions competed for 50 awards, including the Silver Ticket Award and the newly-named Jon Kaplan Audience Choice Award in honour of the late theatre critic Jon Kaplan.<\/p>\n

Tapestry Opera<\/strong>‘s Rocking Horse Winner<\/em> was the clear favourite, winning Outstanding Production, Outstanding Direction (Michael Mori), Outstanding Male Performance (Asitha Tennekoon<\/a>), Outstanding Performance Ensemble and Outstanding Lighting Design (Michelle Ramsay).<\/p>\n

Not far behind was the Toronto powerhouse Canadian Opera Company<\/strong> who took home three awards for Norma<\/em>:\u00a0Outstanding Female Performance (Sondra Radvanovsky), Outstanding Scenic Design (David Korins), and Outstanding Costume Design (Jessica Jahn). They also won a well-deserved Outstanding Musical Direction (Johannes Debus) for Wagner\u2019s G\u00f6tterd\u00e4mmerung<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Musical Theatre had some strong competition this year, but it was Mirvish Productions<\/strong> and Yonge Street Theatricals’<\/strong> Come From Away<\/em> that impressed the judges most with the coveted Outstanding Production award. Bad Hats Theatre<\/strong> also did well with three awards for Peter Pan<\/em>, including Outstanding Production in the Theatre for Young Audiences division.<\/p>\n

In the General Theatre category, Soulpepper Theatre<\/strong> again led the pack with five awards.\u00a0The Last Wife <\/em>garnered\u00a0Outstanding Female Performance (Maev Beaty) and Outstanding Scenic Design (Yannik Lariv\u00e9e),\u00a0Father Comes Home From the Wars (Parts I, II, III)<\/em> won Outstanding Production, Incident at Vichy<\/em> won Outstanding Ensemble Performance, and A Doll\u2019s House<\/em> won Outstanding Costume Design (Victoria Wallace).<\/p>\n

The Independent Theatre Division was an even split with two awards each for Ahuri Theatre<\/strong>\/The Theatre Centre<\/strong>, The Company Theatre,<\/strong> and Crow\u2019s Theatre<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The most awards of the night went to The Theatre Centre<\/strong> across two divisions in the Dance and Independent Theatre for a total of six Doras. what it\u2019s like<\/em> won Outstanding Production, Outstanding Ensemble Performance and Outstanding Lighting Design (Simon Rossiter).<\/p>\n

DanceWorks<\/strong> were awarded two statues for Outstanding Original Choreography for Ylem (Lina Cruz) for 3 Eggs Ago<\/em>\u00a0and Outstanding Female Performance (Jennifer Dallas) for Kittly-Bender<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The Outstanding Touring Production went to Robert LePage\u2019s 887<\/em> by Canadian Stage<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The SilverTicket Award was presented to longtime arts manager Jane Marsland<\/strong>, for her over fifty years of service to the theatre arts community in Toronto.<\/p>\n

The Jon Kaplan Audience Choice Award for Outstanding Production \u2014 an award chosen by the public online \u2014\u00a0was for Come From Away<\/em>, produced by Mirvish Productions<\/strong> and Yonge Street Theatricals<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
